I'm looking T a 1937 m for sale. It's dual fuel and needs a starting tank. This thing looks to be very low hrs and in extremely good shape. I've seen it running ad a show about 5 years ago but it hasn't ran since. Motor isn't stuck and feels like good compression. He has all the original books and some kind of bog oil/grease can that comes with it. Hes asking 3500

Sitting that long the steering clutches may be stuck and they are the last part you come to when tearing it apart. Not sure if you can pull it to see if the clutches are working or not?

I don't know if it means anything but it was just recently pulled out by the road to sell. it was sitting in a little shed until a couple weeks ago. Does this mean the steering clutches aren't stuck??? The owner is getting old and in bad health and doesn't remember much about it anymore.

I'm just guessing but I would guess if the steering clutches were stuck there would be two ditches about the same width as the tracks leading up to where the machine stopped.

Take someone with you that knows about tracks and undercarriage. I,d be more concerned about that than the clutches. At $3500 might be a tad high but if straight , not too far off the mark.Does it have a belt pulley, pto, or hydraulics. Starter, lights , generator and battery? All can ad to price. I would be very interested in the grease can. Not many of those around.

It has PTO no blade or hydraulics. I see a pulley on the shaft that runs the magnito. I assume for a generator. It has no nstarter but a plate over the starter hole. I was wondering if it would have a ring gear on the flywheel? I looked at all the tracks and sprockets. Nothing has what looks like any wear at all. The draw bar hole is perfectly round. I don't know crawlers but this thing appears to be low har and very slick.

It being a 37, probably has starter gear. And yes, pulley on mag side is for generator but I have seen several that had a starter and no charging system.

Suppose this thing has a ring gear, would it be hard to find a starter to fit it??

I see lots of M's on craigslist, and sure would like to have one someday. On craigslist, they are listed anywhere from 1,500 to 6 grand. From what I am hearing, this isn't a bad buy. Darrel

The steering clutches could be stuck and it will roll free becouse main clutch is disengage steering clutches only let it turn right or left as far as a starter you need to find one for a dc case will fit all you need to do is drill the tapered lock hole for the locking bolt I have done this a couple times I have two m crawlers

Thad,
Offer him what you feel is a good fair price and buy it! You want a M and he wants to sell it. Seems simple enough just come up with a price that both are happy with and you become the new owner. Also if you fiancee (sp) says go ahead then I would do it. Post pictures. Sounds like a good machine, not wore out, like the stuff I drag home! Take a picture of her sitting on it, in a bathing suit!
There has been an M on the Denver CL for months but now that I look, it's gone, think they were down to $6,000 from $7,000 a few months ago. BTW there is a D17 Diesel in Estes Park, just listed, $5,000, needs battery's poor repaint job, lots of poor masking on the wheels, expect better for 5 grand! I have a few questions about the ole beast. Can I get original looking seat cushons? It has the bottom only but I see wher sides and a back bolted on and saw them on a brocure that came with it. Would it have a muffler or just a straight pipe? It needs a new starting tank (its ditsilate) would one work from a WC such as the repro nes I've seen for sale? There will be many more questions.

If you do a full on restoration John Hahn in Idaho makes the crawler seats to look original. But will cost $250 to $500 with arm rests and all.
hahnseats@gmail.com 208.924.5538 208.924.7924 fax 509 E Main Craigmont ID 83523 For a working tractor make your own. Plywood for base and back, used foam from a couch or mattress, buy vinyl or canvas from upholstery shop. Use staple gun to attach to one side, fold like rapping a package. The hard part on this is figuring out hardware to attach back rest. Need to do some testing of what will be comfortable to operator,in the height of seat and leg room. On a old Cat the original plywood was getting soft, slapped a new piece of 1/2 plywood on top of old. Took about a day to realize that moved me ahead just enough to that I needed to make more leg room by redoing the seat. I believe most around here where straight pipe and in our fire season a spark arrester on top.
