wd45 starter help!

My wd45 starter does not spin right away when I pull the starter rod. There is a 5-10sec +- delay and then the starter will spin. It only takes a spin or two to start the tractor. Sometimes it will spin somewhat slow, stop and start to spin again all while the rod is pulled. I still have 6v but the battery shows 6.46-+ and the ammeter shows a charge of 5-10 depending apon the engine speed.  Is my starter switch bad or my starter? Thanks again for any and all help. Mike

switch or battery cables one not making good contact.could even be paint or rust not letting the starter ground well.

In addition to things already mentioned, the battery may be weak or undercharged.

Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

Where is your battery ground cable attached? I moved the ground point so it was directly to the tranny cover with no sheet metal involved. Made a huge difference in starter performance. What are you using for battery cables? With 6V system you need something like 0 or 1 gauge - not the lightweight cables for 12V. Is this a new problem or something that's been happening for a long time? HTH.

I believe the ground is part of the battery box mount. The neg cable has been replaced and it appears to be smaller than required. The previous owner said he had a power drain but could not find it. I cleaned the starter switch and everything else has been cleaned as I just repainted the tractor. I had the problem before repainting. What I am going to do is replace both cables with factory, check the charge of my battery before starting, maybe put a shutoff on the cable. Also my tractor is at my cabin so I won't be there for a couple of weeks. And I am hving a small solar charger built by a friend to keep a charge on the battery at all times. I will post my results. Your description of the ground connection is what was done on mine. I can't think of a good reason why that didn't work well, but it surely didn't. Try changing the ground point to a bolt that doesn't involve any sheet metal. Good luck - let us know how you make out!

You might check the actual contact point inside the pull switch. The little copper button on the started housing itself. That could be worn just enough so that a poor contact is made when you pull the lever. A little jiggling and it fianlly makes contact and away you go. Mine is pretty worn and will need to be replaced.

The contact on the starter can be filed flat if you are careful, but if it is wore, the opposite contact on the switch will not be flat. Replace the cables with proper size. You might want to pull the starter and clean all paint or rust off the pilot diameter of the starter and clean the hole in the bell housing where it fits. Rust or paint in this area will cause all kinds of trouble.

I finally got back to the cabin to work on my starter. Before doing anything I checked the battery. It was 6.11, so the battery is good. My starter cable was undersized for 6v. I changed both cables with the correct size and on Dave recommendation I found another place to ground it. I pulled the switch ,which really wasn't bad but I had a new switch and decided if I was going to lose one it might as well be the old one. Results-the tractor spins very well every time. I do believe between the undersized cable and regrounding the problem was solved. Thanks for everyones help.  Mike
