I need to remove several old Allis-Chalmers transformers from an abandoned mining site in Central City Colorado. I am trying to learn how much they weigh. I have their serial numbers - can I look up information regarding these transformers? If so, where?
Thanks!

You might find information about them from the local power company where they are located now.

Go to www.swgr.com/store/oil-filled-transformers.aspx/mfr/ALLIS CHALMERS. Highlite the specific transformer, and the weight is on the specification line.

Check the name plate for that info. It should tell all. Pole mounted transformers can be from around 300lbs to over 1000 lbs.
Other pad mounted transformers can be from several hundred lbs to 10's of thousands lbs and even bigger. Some are so big it takes special heavy haul trucks and permits to carry them. On the larger transformers it should show a dry weight and oil filled. If you can't find the weight, find out how many phase it is. Single or 3 phase. How many kva and volts it is will be a starting point. Also a lot of the older transformers had pcb's in them and special precautions as well as other documentation or handling procedures will need to be taken. |

Thank you for all the replies! I actually got ahold of someone at Siemens (they took over Allis Chalmers' transformer business line at some point) using their toll-free number (1-800-SIEMENS). Based on the serial number I got off the transformer's face plate, he was able to give me a weight.
I have three 50 kVa single-phase transformers. Empty of oil, they weigh approximately 700 pounds each. |

angledge. if you are wanting to sell them, I wouldn't be surprised if someone on this forum would be interested in purchasing them. Might at least pay more then scrap price.

Remember all those were PCB filled. IF the oil is gone thats a plus. IF guys want them, remove the core and use just the tank for whatever you want to do. Copper core, seo some money there but they may ask where tey are form. The name plates should say a weight and a MFG year. We take the old ones down and install new ones and are right back out replacing due to the new ones being junk from the start. Ive seen old 5kva AC's run right with a new 25KVA transformer. Sure they will get warm, but not fail.(usually):)
