IS it good or ok to hone a cylinder with the pistons still in or would this cause future problems? I always thought the pistons had to be out before you did this?

I would never do it. To hone properly you would keep a washing fluid flowing (I use diesel fuel) as you hone to keep from loading up the hone as well as dragging stone fines that scratches deeper grooves. With the pistons in the rings would tend to catch the fines and work them into the cylinder walls. I have read where it was done and they claimed it didn't cause a problem. I am not sure they actually took the head back off to check the cylinder walls for damage. For a successful rebuild the key words are (clean) and (details) clean being a main detail.

Thanks for the answers. That's pretty much what I thought but I have not rebuilt/worked on an engine in a looooong time. I was going to bid on one for sale but the hone job kinda scared me a bit.
