D17 series I only runs at low rpm. If more gas is given, it cracks and runs rough and will shut down. I just put new points and condenser in and it still runs the same.

I cleaned the sediment bowl, and filled the tank with fresh gas.

I'm out of ideas. Any help?

Could this be an air leak around the carb somewhere, you think?

Isn't the main jet the one on the front side?  (as opposed to the one on the bottom bowl of the carb?)

Thanks,
- Roscoe

Main jet is the Tee or L shaped handle on the bottom front at an angle.

If adjusting the main jet doesn't work pull the gas line off the carb and make sure that there is good gas flow. I have seen both the outlet from the tank and the line going into the carb plug on my D17 serries 1. Then if all else fails pull the carb and clean it up you will probably find something in there plugging it up.

Has the carb. be apart?  Sounds like the venture (the brass spool in middle) was left out or trash in main jet.   MACK

If the book says open the main jet two turns that's NOT the exact opening for running good, its an opening where it runs enough you can tweak it further. It does sound as if its running lean which can be a the main jet set too lean, a sticking float, a sticking float needle, grunge in an inlet screen filter, varnish in the line, debris in the tank covering the outlet (screen), a plugged sediment filter, or a misadjusted float that is keeping the gasoline level too low in the float bowl. And can be crud in the passage and the main jet. First thing is to try is adjusting the main jet until it runs good if that works its done. If not then the reason for fuel starvation has to be found.

Ignition timing is important too, because it takes time for the fuel to burn ignition is advanced by a centrifugal mechanism in the distributor as the engine speed is increased, but when that fails and leaves the timing where it was for idle, the engine usually runs smooth, but at low power.

Something fixed it:

Took carb apart and soaked in carb parts cleaner for a couple of hours.

Put back together, not much if any better. (found nothing wrong)

Replaced 295 spark plugs, found one wire broken, and one pulled out of the distributor.

Ran rough after fixing, but finally lined out.  I just ordered a new set of plug wires, but it is fixed for now.

Thanks, for all of the help.

Roscoe.
