6060 AC tach and alt. questions ; WONT WORK !!

   Neighbors got a 6060 that the other day the altenator light came on , checked it; no output; at the same time the tach went crazy bouncing all over the place; I put a new alt. on it ,  put his pulley on the new alt. - but the tach still is slow, bounces all over and dont give an accurate reading; which wire on the 3- wire plug to the alt. is the tach reading one ? Or does the tach need to be redone ???THANKS !!!i
