When checking the transmission oil on a 1959 D-17, what is the proper way to do it. To the right of the gear shift is a breather cap in which the manual calls the "transmission filler". The books says to fill to the full mark on gauge. Well that's my problem, it is just a breater cap with no dipstick. Am I missing a dipstick? If not, how do I know when it is full? Second: if anyone would have any of these parts for sale or available for a D-17 let me know:
1. The two pins that hold the yolk and drawbar up.
2. A pto guard.
3. An hydraulic oil dipstick assembly (mine has the breather but is missing the dipstick).

Steve,
A couple of top link pins form TSC work good for holding the draw bar bail, or yoke, to the brackets, unless you are shhoting for perfect originality.

Yes you are missing the dipstick. If i remember right (the tractor is not here to look at) the breather cap is for the hydraulic oil. There is a screw on dipstick for the transmission. One will mount just a little bit further foreward that is your hydraulics. Dan |

Yeah, I know I am missing the hydraulic oil dipstic that is on a breather. But the transmission filler breather just to the right of the gear shift, should that have a dip stick?

Steve, mine has the tranny breather om the right front corner of the shifter cover with a dipstick. Also in front of the transmission cover on the left is hex plug also with a dipstick for the intermediate chamber with the pto/ power director gears.

Yes, that should have a dipstick also. I don't know if it is the same, but I have a D17 series 4. If they are the same I can measure my dipstick from the top down so you can use something in the meantime for a makeshift dipstick until you find one.

My 1958 D17 has a dipstick on both the trans breather and on the torque tube RH side for the hydraulics/Power Director.

Steve, from the top of the hole in the shifter cover to the oil should be 8 7/8" approx. for full. |

So to summarize, on the early models, the PD cap/check is to the left front of the shifter, transmission to the right of the shifter, hydraulics below the fuel tank, right side of torque tube.....all 3 should have a built in dipstick.
I've got a spare hydraulic breather/dipstick, nice condition....send a pm or e-mail if interested. Thanks
