Actually Fred inspires me, and when I would start getting discouraged, he would come up with something really cool that none of us have, and I would get re-energized for my search.
I doubt I could tell the whole story on a post, (But, I will try) because it started about 7 yrs ago when Deb bought me "Alfred", my 1939 IB #B31197. I could not believe it was one of the 260, but almost all of the correct parts were there, although he had had a real hard go of it in his later years...
I was new to the forum then, only a few yrs under my belt and I naively posted the group, telling them that one of the only parts I needed was the Allis pintle hitch. I actually thought someone would speak up and present one, but it didn't happen.
In fact, I was told that they were not likely to be found, unless still on the tractor. (like the one Eldon just got) I disbelieved the masses, and remained optimistic.
At the GOTO in NY, I found the brother of my tractor #31195, discovering it had come from the same scrap pile. BUT, he had no hitch either, nor did ANY of the IB's at the show.
In a somewhat obsessive manner, I decided to own one, whatever it took......
To make a long story short, I talked to hundreds, if not a thousand, people and recorded every anecdotal story that I heard regarding these parts. I inspected every IB, at every show that I attended. I searched eBay, YT classifieds, Craigslist, and anywhere an IB or Allis industrial equipment might be found. I soon realized that this was a pretty lightweight hitch, and that it wasn't really meant for the bigger equipment. I imagine a lot of them got broken, due to using them for a job that was too big for the part.
Mr.Bill Long nearly made me weep when he described to me how they took these hitches off and threw them in the scrap bin, as they had to come by Industrial tractors through unofficial channels, and they didn't have application for the industrial hitch.
Roger Van Camp provided some good stories when I spent a day with him,although no positive leads developed from anything I investigated.
I read many a manual, parts book, etc. and about once a year, threw out the line in the forum, just to see if there was a bite. The hook always came back with the bait.
This went on for years. I drove thousands of miles to look in nooks and crannies for some forgotten piece of history. I even trolled around Canada and merrie olde England.
About a year ago, my good friend Dave Everett made a comment that caused me to start down an entirely new avenue of exploration. Again, it was the usual dead ends and false starts, but I made a whole lot of contacts that would not normally be in our normal circle of "tractor" associates.
One thing led to another and I found myself in touch with a very knowledgeable fellow who happened to have had an eye opening health issue. This caused him to start liquidating a large amount of "stuff" that he had accumulated over the years. In a conversation about a somewhat unrelated subject, I mentioned something I had seen at Hutchinson, MN and he said "You know how rare that is? I have some parts for that....".
Well, I had to ask, and when he told me what the part was, you could have knocked me over with a feather. I asked him if he had any idea what he had, and he said "Yes, but nobody ever came looking for them, so I just left them in the trailer".
For Fred,the reason there are not six , is because he sold one to a guy 35 years ago to complete his restoration of the aforementioned "RARE"machine.
We came to an agreement on price, I drove on this one last trip, and I bought all of them. Before I left, he said to me "Well son, you are the king of pintle hooks now...".
(I never really thought of myself that way, and I don't think I will let it go to my head. LOL)
He was happy, I was happy, (well maybe? overjoyed....) and the story ends "happily ever after".
