Been pulling the 3bottom s/c since time began, really want to pull a 4 bottom, have WD 45 with frame chopped to accomodate a D-17 diesel.

Your plow appears to be a 4 bottom frame, if it is you can't take a bottom off because you have no way to mount tail wheel assmbely correctly. I used to pull 4-16's and a plow packer with a series 4 in sandy ground with hills.

I was if need be, cut it off with a torch, then weld the wheel back on. Not a reel big deal. but it would be easier to get a 3 bottom but wouldn't be cheaper.

On my 4x18 2000 plow I was able to take the front bottom off and move the hitch over 18" to make it easier to pull.

Ted Buisker has a you tube video of his WD45D pulling a 4-14 plow in some pretty good black dirt. I'll bet the 17 will pull it.

You should be okay with it in sandy loam. A friend pulled 4-16's in heavier dirt than that and he got along fine. If not in third low, then you have two gears in second. But I'm thinking you will use third!

When it gets dry I will try it. If it does it I will post a clip. If not I'll do some modifying.

Just my $0.02, but I think you are going to need some weight on that there powerhouse, or spinning is all you will get done. You will have plenty of power, but........

It does have the 18.4s on it which I thought might help me out traction wise. but yes pulling a plow in sandy soil is easier but as well the tractor spins easier in sand as well.

I aint sayin don't try it :-), but if you have some weights, I would put them on. I don't know if the tires are ballasted, and I can't see the left rear, but it looks like right now, she has no extra weight on her, front or rear. We have sandy loam around our farm too, more loam than sand, but it bites good when solid, down in the furrow when a little moist, but on the top, it tears away easy.

Looks like you got your "new" power steering pump instaled, how is it working?

The brackets need fine tuning and shorten some lines. But it is the reason I chose today to go get my plow. Sure wasn't going to drive the beast without it. and yes it works great.
Even setting still it dug some holes in the ground while testing. Now only time will tell the longevity. But the pump was centered and a collar put in place to hold in line plus I packed it with grease. I have a few pics of the fabrication if anyone is interested. |

I pull 4x14 fully mounted 70 series plow and D17 but it weighed up at 5,800# plus with fluid and then add two sets of rear wheel weights and one set of front wheel weights and five 90# suitcase weights out front. Your plow is cutting wider and is heavier so I would guess you need at least that much weight. But I was in heavy black dirt and clay and pulling a fully mounted plow.
You don't a factory 3 point either so you prabably can't use the traction booster so even worse off. Edited by Lonn - 01 May 2011 at 11:41pm |

I pulled my McCormick 4-16 trip plow with my D17 SIV diesel and loaded 16.9's fairly well about 8-10" deep. I'd think a semi-mt would pull a bit easier.
