I had a fellar come by last week and he bugged me so long and gave me such a sob story,,,I almost HAD to help him with the starter on an older forklift,,,,,He had no idea what brand the forklift is,,,but he does know it is a 6 cylinder,,,and it yellow,,,,sheeesh,,,, I took the starter apart and bushings was almost completely gone and armature had been draggin on the fields but not too bad.. I whipped out some brass bushings on my lathe but had some problems finding the brushes as there just ain't anybody that carries that sort of stuff anymore,,, ![]() Ya'll might remember me talkin bout always buyin all parts I could from a "Mom& Pop" parts store here but after 60 years in the business,,,the old Guy finally closed her up a month ago and sold all his stock to a guy in Texas,, CHIT FIRE,,,!!!Even Ebay did not have the right brushes as the bolt hole on these is offset to one side. Finally I find a repair shop up in Roswell that stocks just about every size of bushings and brushes,,,YEA,,,YEA!! OK,,here is my main question,,,(Whew) ![]() The Guy offered to test the armature and he set it on one of them "OLD" growlers like everybody used to use back in the old days. He run thet hacksaw blade up and down the armature and tells me the Armature is OK,,,just like that,,!!! I had already checked it with my Fluke testor but was glad his " Growler" said it was OK,,, ![]() anybody seen or have one of them "old Timers",,?? |

yeesh, ebay wants $$$$ for them !! just google 'diy growler' or 'homemade growler', ther's plenty of hits. You could probably use a microwave transformer core. Easy way to remove the copper windings is to use an angle grinder to slit(cut) the wires, then yank them out.

I made one about 40 years ago its probably in moms garage. It was a kit a bunch of precut steel sheets that you riveted together and a spool of varnished wire to wrap it. it worked so I got a passing grade.

There's a gal up by here that has a starter/alternator shop and she has one of them yet. I hope she doesn't go out of business until after I'm dead and gone...
