I just purchased a 1955 WD45 that has a combination steering wheel and steering mechanism in place of the steering wheel. It is about 8 inches in diameter and about two inches thick. Printed on it is "Sears Steering Aid". Does this thing prevent sudden jerks in the wheel or does it serve as a makeshift steering assist? I have never seen one before.

is it a 2:1 gear box or similar that just makes it easier to turn the wheel ? No hoses or hydraulics involved ?

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

. There are no hoses to the canister looking mechanism: just hoping someone has seen one of these things.

someone had a post a couple years back... It was a gear box with a gear reduction.. so you had to turn the wheel several turns to get from lock to lock.. but the gear ratio made it easier to turn... The two shafts, in and out are not directly in line, right ? there is an offset due to the centerline of the two gears inside the box ?

. the one one on the far right in your post is the closest in appearance. It must be a reduction deal. Thanks Steve!!!!!!!!

Yes, it was a planetary reduction in the steering wheel hub... and it was a rather universal accessory. It's not a novel concept ... IF you look at the steering column of my '24 Ford TT truck, you'll notice that there's no gearbox at the steering arm at the bottom... just the drag link to the steering linkage... but when you move the steering wheel 180 degrees, the arm only moves about 18 degrees. The top of the column has an interesting flare to it, directly under the steering wheel, and that's because there's a planetary gear hiding under that steering wheel hub.

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

The planetary gear reduction makes sense and is consistent with the steering hub mounted on the tractor's steering rod. An inexpensive steering assist and I have never seen one before. And I spent a lot of time on a WC with a Farmhand loader just wishing it would steer just a bit easier with a fork full of hay. Thanks.

I have something similar on a Massey Harris 101 Senior. Mine says David Bradley steering aid. I believe that was the name Sears used for farm equipment.
