I'm off tomorrow to the wilds of South Dakota in pursuit of the wily prairie dog.  Hoping to spot some orange along the way as we pass thru North Dakota then drop south around Bismarck.
One of the ranches we shoot on there has a big "boneyard" - mostly old trucks and cars, but there is some farm stuff in there as well, this time I'm gonna axe if we can scout around in it.  Never can tell what you might find.  Weather looks kinda iffy for shootin' so might have some spare time on our hands for scoutin' for orange.
cheers,
Creek the Wonder Dog

You are going to pass through some of the most desolate territory known to man.  I would suggest dropping south somewhere further to the east and then going west. I went south of Bismarck to Mobridge once and I will never do it again. Whole lot of nothing surrounded by more nothing. Hills and grass with an occasional butte here and there.

Nathan -
we did drop down on 29 and then cut east.  hadn't gone that way before, it was pretty interesting.  The road construction delayed us first.  Then the highway was underwater, took a gravel section road around it, hadda go in 4wd for aways.  Then got held up in Aberdeen for a train.  So took us 2 hours longer than usual, but it was scenic.  Spotted a C, a wd45 both in nice shape, and what looked like a later D17 but not sIV sitting out in a field with weeds growing up around it.
Off to the killing fields tomorrow.....course high winds are predicted.  Hay at least it will be nice in the hotel bar.
cheers,
Creek

We took 10 west then dropped down to 12 at Aberdeen so we didn't go by your area.
Went to our usual dog town and it was pretty thin. Weather this morning was rainy and overcast, but turned to mostly clear and howling winds later on.  Our rancher friend said most of his dogs died of some mysterious disease, but he is not complaining.  He also said he sold two D19 diesels last year to the scrap man......dang.   He thought he might know someone that had a D17 that might sell me the power steering though so day might turn out okay after all.   Drove over to another spot and found a pretty good town, talked to the rancher, he gave us permission to shoot.  He had a really nice maroon belly 7000 he said he uses nearly every day.  Cruised a informal junkyard as well, no Allis there, mostly old Ford trucks.
Windy in the afternoon but had great shooting even with the winds - the dogs were up close and personal so we did okay.
cheers,
Creek

Creek, here's a SD gopher story for ya.   My brother lives north of Aberdeen at Westport.   I went up to visit them a few years ago in the spring, one afternoon we filled a cooler with beer and grabbed the 22's.   Went to a guys place and sat in his Suburban in the pasture and shot gophers until we were nearly bored.   I looked up and a truck was coming at us full bore.  I asked my brother if he had permission to be in the pasture and he said yes.  I figured we were in for a butt chewin'.
The farmer pulled up, asked how we were doing, and told us when we got done here to stop across the road at his place, go in the shop and get the case (500 rounds) of shells on his workbench, and go out in his back pasture and kill every damn on of his gophers.  I grew up in SD but never seen a pasture so infested with them.   We had a ball until the beer ran out.    Armand
