My tractor has a Kohler TH18 series engine which is of the "Triad" family. It looks just like a CH18 series which is the "Command" series. Anybody know the differences between these two series? Mine is puking oil out from the crankshaft seal on the PTO side and the seal is NLA from Kohler, or Simplicity. I have one ordered but I measured the dimensions and went with an industrial seal which should work.

Until this oil leak presented itself and ordering seals for the "Command" series, I discerned which engine this actually is via the owner's manual that came with the tractor. Never have heard of the "Triad" series myself.

Internet searches show this engine to be rather "short lived" being replaced by the "Command" series of engine. The "Triad" series was a single cylinder block with integral heads casting with cast iron sleeves. The engine was known to pull the sleeves down destroying the engine which ultimately lead to it's demise and replacement by the latter series. After looking at mine last evening, it clearly does not have removable cylinder heads.

I seen several references to where Kohler offered adapters and such to replace this engine with the later Command series after being sued for a lot of money over the engine series. Mine runs well and has always been kept clean but I read where heat is the vital enemy of these engines starting with buildup of chaff and such in the cooling fins.

I found the needed seal which is long discontinued by both Kohler, and the aftermarket. However, it is a common seal once measurements are derived and one is on order as I type this.

Really is a nice little tractor and the tiller works well. Daughter and family are going to get good use of it later this month into early next with preparing their garden which is expanding.
