What size belt does this take?
And, does anyone have a diagram of how the belt fits? Can't find a good picture and I'm not sure all the parts on the tractor are there.

If you have the 36" tiller, the manual can be downloaded at www.simplicitymfg.com and plug the # 990694 into the search box. The belt should be 5/8 by 96" I believe.

That helps a bunch - I've been looking at parts tree a lot for the 720 we got in the deal, so I just missed the page for the tiller. Thanks, should have it working by the weekend!

Now I've discovered that the idler pulley is missing. Based on what I've tracked down, they're not available now. What's a good workaround?

There isn't one, since the geometry is such that the belt does not tighten/slacken when you raise and lower the tiller. You can find a complete, used ilder set for about $100. A fella on simpletractors has 3 for sale right now.
