    Posted: 28 Jan 2016 at 9:38am

Ok,,Guys,,I need some suggestions here, I am tryin to put a spark in the new engine on the D14 Industrial and according to the manual I have,,there is an inspection hole on right side of bellhousing where you bring the flywheel mark to center of hole and that should bring #1 piston to TDC, and distributor to #1.
Problem is,,,the loader attachment arms are blocking access to a "hole" on right side of bellhousing that I THINK is the one the book is talkin bout,,,and it would be a BFJ to remove even the one side,,!!!
I rotated the engine to bring #1 to TDC and both valves were closed and set distributor to have some wiggle room for #1 spark plug. I got the engine to try to fire once but next time it backfired out the exhaust,,,distributor is wired 1243,,,,
Any suggestions,,???    THanks

Sounds luck the timing is very slow, or it's not on # 1. The valves on # 4 need to in overlap.   GOOD LUCK

Number one top dead center on compression stroke point rotor toward number one wire. With the distributor loose rotate back and fourth watching the points. Lock the distributor down when the points are just about ready to open.   Place a wire in the spark plug hole on the piston to check for TDC.

A little tip! before you put a head on mark the crankshaft pulley at TDC. Saves walking around the tractor or crawling under to check.

I agree with Dick, The mark can be anywhere on the crank pulley as long as you can see it, and reference it against something that doesn't move.  If you have it right, that hole in the torque adapter will line up with a groove cut into the flywheel, that you can feel through the hole, IIRR...

I tried to set up a mirror/flashlight but no dice,,,,,so then I set up a "bump" push button cause I don't want the Wife to try to bump the starter,,,she'll prolly get my fingers caught up in something and surely go past the dang mark over and over anyways,,,,,,,I tried that for several times and finally went and fount the old flywheel I had,, to see what the dang mark looks like,,,and no wonder I can't see it,,,,,,,,there ain't much of a mark on that dang flywheel,,,!!!!!
AND,,,don't Ya'll worry,,,I been kickin myself for two days that I didn't mark thet little bitty mark with soapstone,,,,and NEXT time I have that open that son of a buck WILL have the biggest brightest mark on there,,for sure,,,,NNnnggggg,,,,!!!!
Hey Dick Lemmon,,,,do you take IOU's,,,,,,
I'll tell you, Dave,,,you can't hardly SEE the one on the old flywheel,,,let alone feel it,,,but I'll give it a whirl tomorrow morning,,,,gonna try Dick's suggestion first thing,,tho,

Joe there's two marks on the flywheel, one is the TDC and before that mark is the F or fire mark you time off the F mark. If you remove all four plugs the engine will roll over with the fan and not need to use the starter.
3 WD45's with power steering,G,D15 fork lift,D19, W-Speed Patrol, "A" Gleaner with a 330 corn head,"66" combine,roto-baler, and lots of Snap Coupler implements to make them work for their keep.

Joe? Joe? you OK?
Hope the timing thing is moving along. The loader frame is a problem to work around.
Remind me why we are re-timing this?? Notice the WE part of that statement he he:)
We have winter again today. Windy 25 degrees blowing snow. Supposed to be a regular heat wave tomorrow might hit 40 degrees!

HEY GUYS,,,,I done reached 'nother milestone on my never ending list of things to do,,,,,
Finally got the gas tank re-mounted on the D14 and replaced the bad carb gasket,,,,and,,,,and,,,after following ole Dick's suggestions on timing,,,,I put a spark in the new 149 and after it coughed one time, ( I forgot I had crammed a rag in exhaust manifold),dang noise scared the chit outa me,,,!!!,it fired right up and run smooth as pie,,,!!! Oil pressure went to high and stayed there til engine warmed up a bit and slowly came to the "r" and stayed there til I shut it down cause radiator not on yet,,Gonna run the tappets again today and seal her up. WooooHooooo,,,another one done,!!!,,
now I can concentrate back on the D15 on just one little item,,,then it's goin in all the classifieds I can get it into,,,,,
Hey Sugarmaker,,( I like thet handle) I "forgot" to mark the flywheel or the harmonic balancer when I had engine apart so I was flyin blind as the dang loader arm wouldn't let me see the hole to set the timing mark. Ole Dick Lemmon set me straight tho,,,,

Ya Joe them loader frames are a real bear glad you got your timing fixed without having to remove it. Now I got confused is it the d14 or d15 that you wanted to get fixed for some work you needed to do? For some reason I thought one had a backhoe and you wanted to dig something up but now you are talking about selling it???

Hey Dan,,,let me bring you up to speed,,,,in as short as I can,,,,,
Originally, I wanted a backhoe/loader for some work on the place up in the mountains and found the D14 at a salvage Yard in the Alien city. I bought it at a good price but knew it was missing some engine parts. I had several ads and a retired farmer over in Texas called me and offered me TWO D15s at good price, so my Son and I went to go look and what he had were TWO D15 LPG tractors and one was a Series II,,!!!! We loaded the series II before quick could get ready and he told me he would save the other D15 for me to go get later. Unfortunately, the fellar passed away and his new 36 year old wife sold everything,,,except his memory,,,so sad,,,!!!
I WAS goin to use the engine out of the D15 in the D14 but after several guys here Pm'ed me and told me the value of the Series II with the 160 engine and it a very rare LPG model,,I decided to rebuild the Series II and sell it to finance the D14 project. Thru the great help of AJ, JohnKC, and especially ole Dave Kamp and even ole Shameless was rooting for me,,,The Allis Express transported a complete 149 all the way from eastern Iowa to within 40 miles of where I live,,,,Is that great or what,,,???? MANY THANKS,,,AJ, JohnKC and Dave Kamp,,!!!
The D15 Series II LPG is now as ready as I can get it and will make somebody a great addition to their collection,,,or a great farm tractor,if that's what they want.
Soon as my Son gets back from Barbary Sheep huntin, we are goin to shoot and post a video of it,,soon as I find a nice green field for background,,,,, Whew,,,glad that didn't take too long,,,, Now,,you know the rest of the story,,,,,

Cool joe. Too bad you missed out on the second d15. Someone will get a nice tractor now that you got her all fixed up. Guess you will have to go over to the classified section and see if you can get the allis express to haul it to a new home...
