Ok I picked a couple of WD45s 4-5 years ago and I thought I would start to work on them with intentions of makeing one good one out of the two of them, well the first one I pulled in the shop a week ago was by the ser# a 57 the engine was one thing but the rest of the tractor NOT GOOD the farther I went the worst it got, so out the door it went and in come the next one, it has a narrow front has 45 engine, has the 45 shifter and this one has a SER# of 145277, so I looked in the SER# reference on here and states that "Qoute" **WD-45 production began in 1953 at 146607 so what do I have?
a piece of cobble junk or a dumm Question LOL

At ser #127008 the started using the curved shifter that's correct. Don't know on the motor, can't imagine they ran out of WD motors so started using 45's? Could have been upgraded in the last 50 years by someone.

the last wd,s had the curved shifter,thats what you have a late number WD with a engine transplant from a wd45.

Check the engine serial number to get a definative answer on the engine.

I have wire wheel the flat spot on the block letf hand side between the carb and air cleaner where it should be and it is clean NO numbers on engine, The guy I bought it from stated that his dad bought this tractor new and was never worked on other then normal stuff oil change, plugs, points, cap and wires, I have the head off and it is the 4in bore and flat top pistons yet.
Its realy no big deal ! I was just kinda woundering just want get it running and fix it up a little so I can put my 77M rake on it and try it out next summer.

Smokey, where are you? That could be the WD that my dad bought new,dealer had used as a demonstrator, and I sold at auction in 1965. It was bought from Williams Farm Machinery at Charlotte, Michigan. I would like to see it.

The bore will be the same. You need to check the stroke. 4" on WD and 4 1/2" on WD45.

I second John's suggestion. There is a site that shows the correlation between tractor serial numbers and engine serial numbers.
Also, the later WD/WD-45 replacement bare blocks from A-C were all WD-45 blocks which makes a lot of sense when you think about it; why continue casting the old style block when all of the WD "innards" fit right into the WD-45 style block.
The dealer/repair shop was supposed to transfer the replaced engine serial number onto the new block but that was not always done.
I wonder if anyone out there has a WD-45 style block with a transposed WD engine number? That would be really interesting!

Dusty, I live in the thumb North of Marlette 15mi, the guy I bought it from was from up by Harbor Beach Mi. It was sitting it his shed with a flat tire and bad rim, he said his Dad was to old to mess with it and he was to busy, so it was going get taken to the scap or as a Freind I could try to rescue it, so here it is.

Yep, sure looks like the block was replaced at some time.
Like Lonnie says, check the stroke, it will likely be 4" rather than 4-1/2"
