I know this topic has been kicked around before. Did very early production 38 Bs have wood seat backs? I'm sorta involved a "correct" restoration of B751 and the owner wants it right. This old B was found with a wood seat back that a closer look proved to be off a old oak rocker or a dowel back kitchen chair.
We are looking for actual photo proof of production Bs having wood seat backs. I remember seeing some prototype photos of Bs with what appears to be seat backs made of something other than the stamped steel everyone is familiar with. With lots of folks visiting family and friends on this Thanksgiving day and maybe getting out the old family albums a good picture of a production B with a wood seat back could somehow surface.
I personally think the wood seat back and the Waukesha engine went away at the same time.
No photoshoped pictures of Bs with wood seat backs please. Have a Great Day

Makes you wonder why would a restored Waukesha B have a wood seat back? Something had to prompt that concept.

Ken please let me know what you find out on this. My 38 b has a wooden back and it is a flat board not curved but it could have been put on it in the past. Also did b's ever have a padded back rest? I've seen them 4 sale.

My grandpa padded his B seat back with a burlap tater sack wraped around it and held in place with corn shawking twine. It could have been grandma who padded the seat. She drove the B more than he did. I really enjoyed growing up with a B in the family.

Ken, I have two B seat backs that are (were) padded. One is on my '38 (sn7xXX) that I'm sure is original. The metal part of the back is made with a rolled edge facing forward so it can't be a case of someone padding their own. I'll try to remember to get photos today, but may be to full of (WATCH IT!!!) turkey. Lloyd

I sure would like to know also. I have a 38 B and it has the wide uprights and a wooden back which I do not know if it is orginal. I am in the process of restoring it and would like to know. The serial number is B5828.

Rog B5828 would have been about half way in the B producton for 1938. I have a notion that this far into B production a steel seat back like on all future Bs and Cs would have been standardized. Until proven wrong by a vintage photo of a early B with a wood seat back, I will go out on a limb and say there were no production Bs in 1938 that came new with wood seat backs. The Dealer Parts books I have list one seat back, part number 208664 for all Bs and Cs. 2 seat back support springs are listed. Part 205694 prior to B12015 ( the wide ones) and part 208874, B12015 and up and all Cs |

My 38 B #254 has the wide supports with a metal back. It also has a 39 engine and front wheels, so who knows what was original.

Ken, my B450 came to me with a metal seat back. I have B brochures showing the allis engine, cast center front wheels, and a wooden seat back but I have yet to see a photo of a production B with the wooden back. Confusing.

I have a b with serial # 150 and it has the wide supports and a oak board that looks like that it was padded at one time with a pad and od canvas also the info that i have said that the seat and back were of OD canvas . When I restore this tractor I am going to put padding on the back and cover both the seat and back with the OD canvas.1953 IB alabama

I am with Ken in Texas on this one. I have a dealer parts catalog and it mentions nothing of a padded B seat back, and that has EVERY part EVER made for the B/C. Right down to the seat springs. So this leads me to my conclusion that, no, there was never a factory padded seat. HOWEVER, I'm sure, like many other things that I have heard about the B tractors, something like a padded seat back could have been put on by the dealer before or after it was sold, or at the customers request.

Several 38 Bs here in this thread are Serial Numbered less than 1000. For a long time I heard the 38 B Engine Casting Number, if it was cast in 1938, ended in a 10, 39s 11, 40s 12, and so on. Engine BE532 in my shop has a casting number ending in 9. There has to be more. I would guess all before maybe 1000 or more were cast in 37 and had a 9 as the last number.
