Driving up North Saturday to look at a 1973 Allis Chalmers 653 Dozer. Sale by owner. Owner tells me i will need to replace 2 lower support rollers (I think this is part number 1003796-8) and 4 fuel injectors (I think part number 4060859-8). Problem is I can't find the parts on line. Scaring me that maybe I should not buy this dozer. Heard good stuff about the dozer though and my father in law is excited about it. Any advice out there? Especially leads to parts suppliers.
Thanks Ryder

files.minnpar.com/partbooks/.../650%20SERIES%20PM%20%239006632-5.PDF
found this manual and both # are good, one's a roller ,other is complete fuel injector I'm thinking a good diesel shop could rebuild the injectors ? maybe the roller could be welded ? in any event I'd go for a low,low price as it's not running so what else is 'busted' ? jay |

Thanks Jay, owner says (of course) everything works and is running well. Spoke with him on phone. Seems like a straight shooter. Paying $8K. Did find 3 great leads on injectors. A place that cleans them, a refurb (half price of new), and new for $98 each with exchange. I'm going to try and determine if the roller needs internal parts for repair. Maybe bearings available for example where whole roller assembly seems extinct. Thanks!

If the rails and sprockets look good, I wouldn't worry. The rollers can be found used or repaired. HTH Tracy

As for bearings, you can measure the old bearings and get replacements. May not say they fit that dozer but they're probably still available. Our local Napa is good for this. They got me a bearing for a NH super 55 bar rake several dollars cheaper then it was from NH

Price seems high to me! Be sure you can drive it and check out steering clutches and torque converter. Also final drives are - can be problem!

hmm ,seller says it need 4 injectors out of 4, so does it even start ? If not, I'd go low with the offer to buy it!
Rollers shouldn't be too bad but how the heck can you check ANYTHING out without the engine running, let alone get it onto a trailer !! |

Jay, I did find the pdf. Think I’ll order it too. Expect I’ll need it. Yes, this is my intro into heavy hauling. Heavy for me anyway. Picked up a F550 7.3 Diesel with gooseneck. Dozer comes in around 12,800. Super excited about my long trip to Montana where I’ll be putting it to use. Ryder

Owner says rails and sprockets good. Limited pics look ok but I’m at the other end of the spectrum from being an expert. My first. I hope your right because 2 days of searching netted zero on rollers. Thanks for the input Tracy. Ryder

Thendrix, thanks for the tip. I work with some mechanicalengineers who own and work on some old tractors. They said they Might be able to help me with roller refurb. We were looking over the exploded diagram. I’m sure it all looks easier than it really is. Ryder

FTB, thanks fir the tips. The owner said she starts right up and we can push some dirt around when I show. Says he has been using it recently. It’s the hidden stuff driving it around won’t show that I worry about. For example how would I know if final drive on its last legs. What do you think a good counter offer would be? I will post some pics from the ad if I can when I finish responding to all this great input.

You should be able to tell if the finals are leaking any. That's at least a start.

Allis, will do. Going to make sure we run her and excercise her then i’ll Be checking for class 2 and 3 leaks of any kind. More research will help me make sure I know what I’m looking at.Takes me back to my Army PMCS (preventive maintenance checks and services).

Jay, those were my thoughts exactly. I asked about that specifically. As I noted in my other response he says she starts right up and runs good. Says she’ll trailer fine. I just need to ask him why then these things needed. Maybe he can tell some minor performance issues and is just suggesting replacements for injectors. Maybe rollers just starting to act up. Maybe some foreign noise. I will ask more directly. Thanks for input. Ryder

Gary, thanks for the options/comparison. I do need a Dozer for the work I’m doing. I actually saw the ad for the MI Dozer in my search. The price is on par for the one I’m looking at which has ROPS.

For track wear, the chart on this webpage gives you per cent worn out with a simple measurement of 4 links on the track rail. Saves the discussion of whether the rails are "good" or "bad". The 653 specs are there.

Mack, agree with your sentiment. I am quite looking forward to working on her. I have a father in law and an uncle who do this kind of thing. The uncle actually used to work in a shop with heavy equipment including dozers. Problem is they are already in Montana and can’t go with me. Off th grid kind o guys so no smart phones. They aren’t worried bout the rollers either. Said just get er and bring er home.

So I bought the AC653 Dozer.
Ran her all summer and fall. I can’t get my father-in-law off of it. He wore out the sprockets having so much fun so I need new ones. HD Sprockets won’t work I know because I bought a pair they had no bevel and would not line up with the track rail. Where can I get some aftermarket brand new ones ? ![]() |

Nice looking machine. In my opinion. It looks like you should have it back a little further on the trailer to level if it off. Just a thought.
