Was on an online deal called Quora; Have you ever noticed the $15k-$20k discounts being offered on the new Dodge trucks? I know I have and I am repeatedly reminded of that as a Chevy salesman by customers trying to compare Ford, Chevy and Dodge…You know the big 3. Ford and Chevy have been sitting around $7k-$10k discounts for the better part of 2019. Sometimes it goes up higher but that might be for a big sale month like Memorial Day or similar. Dodge has continuously stayed with these huge price cuts. What do you think that does to their resale value? If they have a Ram CrewCab, QuadCab, SedanCab (or whatever dumb name they use trying to seperate themselves) 1500 for $45,000 with $15,000 in discounts that lowers the net price to $30,000 on a brand new truck where as I have seen similar style truck, a couple of years old being listed at $31,999. Which is the smarter purchase? Even if the new truck was say $33,500 it is still a way smarter purchase than the used one because you will have the entire warranty period covering you where the used truck’s has already begun and could be close to expiration. The Chevy (and probably Ford) will have that same $45,000 1500 Crew Cab truck with total discounts bringing it to around $37,500 and the similar used trucks we have go for around $31k-$33k. Now do you see the difference in the resale values and how new car pricing directly affects that? Ford and Chevy are the best selling trucks in America for a reason…these are good quality built trucks (for the most part). Dodge on the other hand seems well built and they have HEMI (like that really makes a difference anymore). Their quality has gone to crap, the interiors I have seen have crappy finishes and the trucks tend to fall apart well before the powertrains. Use it too much like a truck and things start to rattle and squeak well before they should. Smart buyers are starting to see this and not just the auto industry. Dodge gets rave reviews when new but then check back in 3 years at the quality complaint reviews. I can go to the online auctions that the dealers use to see the upcoming units and there will be plenty of Ram trucks available almost 2 to 1 for Chevy & Ford combined. The Ram is a distant 3rd to Ford and Chevy and it is well deserved. They do not build a quality truck…anymore and they really haven’t in a very long time. Chrysler as a whole puts out a very crappy product and that used to not be the case. They did well with the introduction of the Charger, Challenger and 300 for a few years but even those have suffered the Chrysler curse over the years. |

I brought my first new 3/4 ton pickup in 1975 and the last one in 1993. At today’s prices I’ll never again have a new pickup. A $45,000 price on a wantabe 1/2 ton grocery getter of any brand is rediculous. That on top of everything being controled by a computer that is designed to fail and just the total ugliness of all of them, make rebuilding something from the time that real trucks were still made seems to be the only option I’ll persue.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

The first new pickup I bought was 1974 3/4 ton GMC and when I left the dealers the first bump I bit the hood popped open! Downhill from there! The 95 F350 was a good truck and after 100,000 miles it started to rust away and had squeaks and the 460 motor liked it's gas! I bought a 2002 GMC used to replace the F350. Good truck. Nice interior, rode good. Had mechanical issues again. Transfer case and transmission. Got 230,000 miles out of that one. Now I have a Ram 2500 and I like it. Being a new truck time will tell. My first Dodge truck. Wife had a Caravan years ago that lasted forever. My Dad always referred to GMC as God's Mechanical Curse!

Rode in a friends 'New' dodge last month, miserable ride like a log wagon, bragged of the stiffer frame making it a stronger truck, I do not see it.
Watched the no twist display videos, what I fear there is a failure to yield will cause stress failures that we saw in Semi Tractors back in the 70's with 'Stiffened' frames. Close friend I worked with for years just bought a new GMC, was looking to do a price comparison, ended up buying as they discounted the GM from $51,000 to $32,000 right off, rides like a car, crew cab half ton and he likes it so could not argue. Dang, my Dodge 2500 is a 2008. How long do I have to wait until it falls apart? It hasn't happened yet...

For giggles I went to Edmunds, appraise vehicle and compare Chevy 2500 to Dodge 2500, same features, mileage and condition
Dodge was a good $3000 higher for trade in and Retail price over the Chevy

I am driving a 2006 Toyota Tundra I purchased "used" in 2007. It had 16 miles on it. It will soon turn over 200,000 miles and has never once been in the shop for anything but scheduled maintenance. Still uses no oil between changes at 5,000 miles. We are struggling to keep dad's old Fords running, and the old GM trucks I used to have and what I was issued at work would fall apart faster than you could fix them. Have never owned a Dodge. Some guys I work with do, but they tend to trade for new every year. BTW, the Tundra was assembled in Texas. At the time, comparable Fords and GM were being made in Canada and Mexico. |

Up here, north of the 49th, it'll cost you $42K to get a regcab, shrtbox, sml v8, XLT. Oh yeah, another 13% for taxes...hmmm. NONE in stock though,NONE in Canada last time I looked, the lots are covered in 4 door, 4wd $75K pickups though....

Dang John, I think we better be getting that burr out from under your saddle. ![]() I thought Ram sales were on the rise cus of the cheaper price? Anyhoo, I bought the F250 crew cab short box gas wirh 1,000 extra hung on an XLT model in 2012 for 36 and change out the door. Every time I drive by that stealership for some pop corn and I see a new sales person I tell them that I will never own another Ford. My answer as to why is that beast will outlive me. ![]() Aside from the log wagon ride, it has been a great trouble free truck -- SO FAR THAT IS. I forgot to ask. Are you contemplating digging up one of those mason jars and buy you some of that new vehicle smell? |

I'm not buying anything. If I want the new car smell I'll get some of those things you hang from the rear view mirror. Just thought I'd use a dull stick to get you all disscusen something. Speaking of new car smell, my daughter suggested dripping some peppermint oil in my car to keep the mice out. I guess it works, but I may have used too much, have to drive with the windows open!

I agree that the Tundra is by far the most reliable but the darn truck just looks dated to me. Maybe if they would include a quad 50 mounted in the bed........😜

My 3/4 Ton GMC has near 350000 miles. Has had a new trans at 258000 a new water pump and a new fuel pump. 6.0 gas. The 4x4 buttons are the biggest problem I’ve had. One set of plugs along the way.

Thad, I always wonder about plugs. My neighbor has always gotten a Ford for his service/company truck. I don't think they have ever changed a plug and they usually get him a new one at around 180 K miles. |

Don't have that Tundra model down here. Just wondering, are they a full sized truck, or are they narrower track like most Japanese SUV's?

Question is why overprice them then give a discount to get rid of them? Why not figure discount in to begin with which would bring them down to still being overpriced by about 75% more than their worth? They can keep their plastic fantastics as far as I'm concerned.

car prices are a scam of course... MSRP, they fudge that by say 25%, then you 'barter' to say 5% below MSRP and they STILL make a wad of cash off you, LOTS more if you lease or make payments. Ford dealer here wants me to buy an 'on the lot' 4wd, F150, reg cab , 8' box for 46K Canucks( Made in kansas btw)... I tell him, I only need a 6.5 box and that only idiots need 4wd in Hamilton. There are ZERO 2ws reg cab shrt box F-150s in Ontario !

They are a full size 1/2 ton truck. When I bought it in 2000, it was the highest towing capacity of the four companies, full size trucks. We bought a Toyota Rav4 SUV in 16, it has as wide a stance as the truck.

What ever Dodge is doing must be working because they just passed up Chevrolet for the # 2 spot in sales. I don't like to admit it because I'm a Chevy guy.

Ouch.... I just bought a new RAM pickup last week. Better go back to the dealership and see if I can trade back for the 1997 Ford F150 that was sitting in the back row in the weeds. Obviously this would have been a better truck to buy than my new RAM.

I'd buy another 97 F150 in a hearbeat if it was in similar shape to mine ! I know I can replace everything on mine AND have a pro paint job done and STILL have a huge wad of cash in the bank ( to buy more oranges...) I'd also NOT have t worry about all that fancy, useless electronic toys 'they force upon new truck buyers.. BTW Yukons do NOT have a rear door HAND latch !! So when battery goes dead, you can't get in.....
