Kalifornia did away with the ramps on I-5 Grapevine going into Bakersfield YEARS ago, had a haul out there in '77, CO Mack F700 refrigerated van. Offloaded at a Grocer Chain outside LA, Floor loaded Kaukauna Club Cheese, anyway was empty headed north thru the valley picking up partial loads of fresh fruit in front half of trailer. Coming down the grade was not having issues and radio crackled, RUNAWAY, checked mirror and saw flashing lights back behind on the grade, not a Minute and the Lead Cop cars sirens wailing go Screaming past, had seen them up just down from the summit writing tickets, right behind them a flatbed, load of steel ALL the wheels smoking profusely. Soon as he got past the trailing cops zoomed by. Were less than two miles to bottom of grade. Got down towards the TS Exit, there in the median was the truck, already FD on scene, trailer brakes still smoking one wheel being put out and the hood up oil everywhere engine evidently chucked its guts at bottom of grade.

Got my goods on topped off lettuce at Salinas, back thru Baker to head home and there sat the trailer, truck gone but could still smell burnt gear oil and brakes. Attendant at TS said driver was ticketed HEAVILY, truck was a total, trailer was under impound, load was shifted to another tuck, driver lost license and job and his rig. Were locations for ramps up the grade, KA decided was TOO Costly to maintain them and removed them. Could have killed a number of auto occupants for that lack of foresight.

One hit the run away ramp at foot of Blowing Rock mountain a few months ago, flat bed hauling steel, load shifted to front taking top of cab off killing both drivers.  The ramps around here are sand that have mounds about 2' high spaced out up the ramp, ever so often the DOT brings in a back hoe and fluffs the sand to keep it soft.  If truck goes in with much speed it will knock the steering axle back to drive axle.   Years ago saw several on US 52 north of Mt. Airy on Fancy Gap Mt.

Edit,  Always referred to as Sand Traps.

Bet it took the driver a while to pull the seat out of his rear end! Luckily some idiot car driver didn't get in his way. Those ramps do work, just glad I have never had to use one.
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

That was a bad situation thank God there was a ramp there.  It used to be a hell of a fine if you put a truck in one.

When i moved from SW WY to Ventura for an oilfield co. in 85, manager had me run over to our Bakersfield branch for the first time with about 1200# of wellhead.
Made me stop at the point of entry scales on the LA side as although a little more driving, wanted me to see the inside of that facility for a reason.
Remember the movies they showed in HS, usually just before prom, called "Speed Kills"(?) back in the 70's?Remember the hush that came over the crowd of students when they showed close-up pics of accidents and the dead bodies.
That was nothing compared to what the CHP used to put on the inside walls of weigh stations/POE's as they were graphic, very graphic.
Mostly loads not secured that came forward off the trailer and taking the driver forward into the engine bay on big rigs. Big B&W pics of bodies covered the wall to get your attention.
Never forgot that and to this day, use twice what most say is needed for tie-downs when hauling.
Remember that runaway truck ramp well on the west side of the Grapevine and seen a few trucks being removed from it, that ramp was huge.

I saw one "parked" on that very ramp years ago, when I came back later that day they had the state D6 leveling out the ramp.  It's usually parked in the area just for that reason, pushes snow in the winter, gravel in the summer, rocks whenever they fall off the mountain.  I can't understand why the truck driver in the video didn't stop just outside the tunnel.  Speed limit in the tunnel is 50 so he should have been able to stop ok.  It's 200 plus miles from the tunnel to Kansas and there aren't any major down hill sections until you get under the mountain.  At least he was able to keep the rig straight on the ramp.

Good thing it was there,, in my opinion, drivers are too comfortable in nice trucks and distracted a lot , and don't watch the signs,, was an 18 wheler at the Lake of the Ozarks going up hill, and a long drag- push cars thru an intersection red light--- 2 gals from Eldon burned to death, my point is - going up hill and still didn't slow down for the light
