Hello everyone. Its been awhile since I was last on. I aquired a "new" machine. I dont know much about it. What i do know is ut is a allis chalmers road grader with what looks like a 3-71 gm detroit engine. The only numbers i can see on the tag are stamped BD3-1615. Working on pictures.

Very similar. Mine has a cab and some strange rack on the back and a hose on the blade. Im sure they are "custom" additions.

Post a picture of the "strange rack". Might be a shoulder maintainer, or the rear loader. Or as you say, something home-made...

I've been teying to upload the pictures that I have but cant seem to make them small enough without cutting half the machine out of it.

if your on a computer, open the photo in PAINT and RESIZE to 50%... then see if it is about 800 x 600 pixels... if not, RESIZE again...... then SAVE and upload to the site.

So I am working on getumting some things together to go get this old girl running atleast enough to put on a trailer. Anyone know where a good place to aquire a usible set of tires for this? 13-24s probably need 6. Some cracks are big enough i can put my stream light pocket flash light in. Also i believe it is a 12V system judging by the alternator on it. Anyone know if I double up on batterys if it would hurt anything? Thanks

just for reference and cost, you can visit Miller Tire
Dont hurt to have a BIGGER battery or DOUBLE battery in a vehicle.. just adds more capacity..
How long has it been setting ? Does the motor turn over by hand ? Oil ? Antifreeze ?.... sometimes better to winch on a trailer as compared to "trying" to make it run.

There was a similar grader near here, it was a 4-71 I believe. But if you have had your head inside the the brush I will not say your wrong. In the day it would of come with 2 big 6 V wired to make 12V at the starter.So a good 12 V battery could start it. But the bring it back from it's sleep no telling how much cranking it will need.
The one here had truck tires on the front. As yours has in the pic. I don't think the wider tire worked on the front.

I would pull the valve cover and check that the valves move and spray some oil in the cylinders. If the cylinders are stuck i could see if they will pop loose by tugging. I dont like to do it but it will be over hauled this winter/spring anyways.

Check some dealers to see if they have some old skins - I know when looking for some tires for my Adams grader Cat dealer said they had some with some tread left they would sell cheap .
A good 12 volt battery should start a 3-71 without much trouble , the Pettybone loader I had with a 3-71 I used a single 800 Amp battery in it .

Thanks. I have to double up on batteries on my HD5 with a 2-71. Mostly because low compression. I found a used set for it. But I think at this point I will lowboy it home and start pulling it apart. I will post new pictures soon.
