Issue? Well I finally was home long enough to tear into it. Hopefully my picture of the fan will post. The fans mfg. date is stamped 3-10-70 and the tractor rolled off the line later that year. The image shows the failed blade AND the 12:00 and 5:00 blades are cracked clear through the rivets. This model has 3500 original hours.

That's very interesting, Lonn. I didn't know that was the reason. I've seen both kinds and always wondered why there was a difference.

Thanks Captain Dana for sharing your troubles,
It might perk the interest of others to give their blades a look to see if they are having failure too and possibly prevent a Radiator disaster happening for them too.

The 200 Allis got a 7 blade fan in them.

less harmonic noise = less vibration

Is this the tractor that it's 301 lost an injector tip into a cylinder? If so, and operator at the that time ran it too long, then wonder if that engine miss could have imbalanced things enough to cause this issue?? But maybe the harmonic crank pulley & fan blade belt would have softened any radical torquing to fan? Just thinking...

Look at alternators. The little fan on many of them are not equal all the way around for noise purposes. I never thought of the vibration factor.

That's just a side effect. The reason was for harmonic noise reduction.

I agree with Lonn. Making the blades uneven somewhat cancels out frequencies to amplify by generating multiple frequencies that are not a complement of each other.

Hi guys I put a new fan assembly and radiator in the XT yesterday and headed out to bale 90 of new seeding. It does seem quieter. I will take the dinged 2 year old radiator to the shop and see if it can be repaired. If it can be repaired I'll have to sell it or buy another XT.😆

I remember waaaayyy back in the catacombs of knowledge, steel can be designed for very long fatigue life against repetitive load cycling and vibration.  You can basically design it to a point that says essentially if it lives this long, it's going to live, until an irregularity or impurity causes a crack.

Aluminum there is no such number, you can keep designing it longer, but there's no "plateau" so to speak like there is for steel.

Interesting.  Admittedly, I don't know how that applies exactly to the situation, but interesting.

This may be dumb but I was wondering if some of these aftermarket automotive fan blades would work as replacements. Stainless steel blades- come with different numbers of blades and you can choose different diameters. They sure move a lot of air at low rpm. They flatten out at higher rpm which would be insignificant on tractor application. Any thoughts???

Isn't stainless steel a little brittle if you are trying to find a fan that won't crack apart?

Don't know the answer to that Lonn. I do know they work extremely well on the hot rod stuff. Some of them are good to 10,000 rpm. I've not seen an issue with them - yet. LOL
