I'm looking for ideas where else to look. My R-40 was parked in front of the corn planter. I went to start it to move it out of the way and the engine rolled a few times and then nothing but clicking at the starter and a ton of static on the radio. Cycled the key, nothing but clicking at the starter and persistent static. The machine has new batteries and lots of battery capacity. They both test fully charged. When I bought the machine it had a brand new spare starter in the assortment of parts that came with the machine. I've put about 500 hours on it since I've owned it and its started very time without incident. Changing starters is a simple swap so I disconnected the positive cables, swapped out the starter and when I attempted to put the positive leads back onto the batteries the starter began to roll the engine with the key in the off position? Does anyone have any ideas of what is causing this? New starter looked and fit up identical? Kind of spooked me a bit so I'm in collecting my thoughts. Any ideas are appreciated.

If the batteries are fully charged the cables may be loose or need cleaning.

starter solenoid is bad( shorted) . I'm assuming it's ON the starter cause if it was external, the other starter would have been spinning too. Jay

Mystery solved. Pulled the wiring diagram and started tracing wires. Found some damage caused by those pesky things that live free while eating up the profits. No, not an ex-wife although the description fits, probably a mouse. When changing the starter I obviously moved some of the wires a bit and it allowed the bare spots to touch. Damage was right where the wires sit flat above the starter and go through a wire grommet. Didn't look like damage due to rubbing. Repaired it and that new starter really spins that engine. The old R-40 is back to purring like her normal self. Thanks to those who replied. Always appreciate tapping into people's experience. Seems that no matter how much time you spend blowing off/washing a combine at the end of the season it never turns out to be enough.

That other mouse is commonly referred to as a House Mouse. A little more preferred critter.
