   i have seen a couple buildings like that and the VERTICAL portion was glass windows for light inside.

   Two building with that style roof here. Maybe 3, I need  look but all 3 where tractor dealership shops when built. Probably built right after WW2 all the windows face south in these. We get no snow to speak of (Shameless that is not a challenge), would think it would take work to remove it most places and any savings from natural light would be used else where taking any savings away.

 Well consisting fuel is going up daily  so what you can do in next few day

   Buildings were built like that in the late 1800's, early 1900's.  Electricity was in its infancy.  Lighting was poor.  These were built like this to get the best natural lighting and to provide the best ventilation.

   There is a building in Winston-Salem NC like that called the sawtooth building. I have seen buildings like that in other cities.

   In the northern climate it also helps reduce snow load by melting some of the white stuff off the roof by greenhouse effect.
