If rules say 1957 and older or production models that started in 1957 should a series 4 17 be allowed to pull? The d17 was introduced in the fall of 57  My interpretation would be yes it could pull but everybodys different. What are your thoughts?

I would say so.  As far as I know, a 4 has no advantage over the older ones.  I assume the hyd are going to be pulled for weight anway.  What other differences would there be that someone could claim as an advantage?

Thats the way it is in the two clubs I pull with. Dairyland and Comunity. Just think of all those olivers that also fit this rule.

Any of the pulls i go to in the SWOH and SEIN the year rule applies th the same model. I can pull my '56 WD45 in a pull that has a year limit of '55 because the model was produced before the cut off. As far as the D-17 goes i have a '59 I can pull it in a '57 year pull because its the same series that was produced in the year range. A series 2 3 or 4 couldnt pull because they changed the series desigination. I dont know why that matters really but thats the way it is.

A Series IV has more powertrain HP losses than a Series I,II,or III due to the hydraulic pump ran off the flywheel via a hollow quill shaft as mentioned.  I don't remember how the shaft is supported on the outside of the torque tube where it directly drives the external hydraulic pump but it might not be quite as easy as pulling the pump off and putting a plate over it.  You'd probably have to go in the torque tube and remove the whole drive mechanism to do it right.  Much cheaper and probably better to use an earlier D17 as a puller and save the Series IV's for work.  My 2 cents...Mike
