Pulled the C out of the jungle

   My father in law has owned a C since, I guess, the 1970s.  One of  his dad's friends gave it to him back then - he'd bought it new in 1948, used it for years and finally just parked it in the early '70s.
It's been parked at a friends place for at least ten or twelve years - long enough to turn into part of the "landscaping"!

After some vicious weed-whacking, we mostly cleared it out.

(That's my sister, my wife and my father in law)

And, guess what, we found a manure spreader that nobody remembered!

Hooked it up and hauled it out!

After all that time, it had sunk about 6 inches into the dirt, but the tires still has at least some air in them.  Unfortunately, the engine is frozen and the manifold is cracked.  So my father in law is tearing it down and this winter, we'll rebuild the engine and repair or replace whatever needs fixing.

But...there's one thing that's driving us nuts!  We can't figure out how to disassemble the lever and rod that go through the right side of the radiator shroud to control the shutters in front of the radiator.  The lever and rod have to come out before the shroud can come off.  We've got the I&T manual and a parts manual, but neither of us can see quite how to take that doggone thing apart.  Can anybody help?

	Sweet...with a single front wheel to boot. Thats like finding money in your pockect that you'd forgotten about.

	To remove the crank assembly for the radiator shutters, you turn it all the way counter-clockwise or anti-clockwise, and then it should unscrew, but it is probably rusted stuck. Can you shoot some penetrating oil through the grille mesh onto it? That might help. if you could get some heat on it from a torch, that is most likely what you will end up doing, but be careful to keep all of the heat away from the radiator, as brass fins and solder melt really fast. HTH

	Thanks Dean! We'll give that a try this weekend. We've been using penetrating oil on other stuff like it's going out of style, so this shouldn't be a problem. Is the single wheel uncommon? I haven't been able to find any pictures of one on the Internet.

	Here's my C, the single fronts are not that common about 640 + made. Nice to see another one pulled from the fence row to be fixed up. Have a good one. BILL P

	Wow! You struck gold. It is SFW and has the cultivators. Even better is the condition, it looks like it has very little rust which is suprising seeing how long it had sat in the elements. That is just proof that they are TOUGH!!

	I was able to unhook this one and pull it out without getting the threads free to turn.

	Hardcase, really you are starting out with a great project there, you have a great start and a whole lotta potential there! I have seen alot worse come back to life again! Awesome story and pictures, keep us updated with pictures through the restoration process!!

	great looking C have fun with it. If you look up through the grille screen, there is a spring that clips over a pin (look at Dick's picture) remove the spring and the rod end of the crank can be unhooked and the crank can be removed. Bob

	Nice SFW C! Cultivators should be handy too if you have all the parts. That is quite a find. Keep us updated on it.

	Thanks for all the hints and comments (and pictures, too!) We'll be out to the in-laws' place this coming weekend, so I'll take a some pictures and let you know how the disassembly goes!

	Well, as it turns out, the manure spreader belonged to my father in law's buddy. He'd forgotten that it was out there, so everybody ended up being pretty happy that day!

	Thats a nice looking C you got there. Thats awesome that it has a single front wheel and cultivator. Those single front wheeled C's are pretty rare. I seen one at our local farm auction a year or so ago and I am still kicking myself for not bidding on it. Good luck with the project and post pictures as you make progress. Blake
