Im fixing a broken pto shaft.. The YOKE was not aligned correctly to the shaft so the two ends were "out of time" by 45 degrees.. Busted the yoke.... This is a square shaft drive so you can put it together 90 degrees out of phase.. This specific shaft has a BUMP on the square drive so it can only be insterted into the female part one way.. Can not be turned 90 degrees... Right now i do not have access to the male shaft with the BUMP on the shaft.
Looking on the internet, i did see this photo... I was assuming the BUMP on the shaft did align with the Yoke ears on the other end of the shaft... Confirmed ??

You could always drill and drive in a roll pin, using it as a bump. Or weld a bump to the male half... Yes, the ears line up with each other, front and back, when it is in phase.

YES... he has two shafts and one has a BUMP on the square and one does not.. I planned to weld a BUMP on the one shaft at some later date.. He knows to keep them in phase when installing.. I have one shaft in the shop to repair that had the female square drive out of phase by 45 degrees.. Has torn up two yokes... I cut off and getting ready to weld back, but wanted to get the BUMP notch setup so either male square drive will fit into this female end.
I looked all over the internet and everyone talks about ALIGNMENT. .. and i know that part.. just wanted to confirm that the BUMP is aligned with the yoke EARS and not 90 degrees to them.................... Thanks Dave..

and now for the rest of the story ..............
Called the son and told him to pull the shaft that was in use and look at the YOKE EARS with respect to the BUMP on the square shaft... Of course it is DIFFERENT than the only photo i found on the internet..
Apparently each company that builds a shaft sets their OWN standard.. I sure would have though the EARS and BUMP would be in the same line... not 90 degrees off..
OH WELL.... at least both shafts will now be interchangable with each other and each half.. BIGGEST problem was one shaft was out of time ( alignment)... welded by previous owner.. by 45 degrees and tore up two yokes before he called me and we inspected and found out WHY.

i never heard of PTO shafts being in alignment! what does that mean? I guess I never looked either

Jeff, when you slide the two halves together, the YOKES on both ends need to be parallel to each other.. Thats why some new ones are ODD triangles or Rectangles, so you cant put them together 90 degrees off....... Worst yet is when someone weldes a new yoke on the end and gets it 30- 45 degrees off... Lots of vibration and will tear the yoke out in a few hours..

How many pickups have been jacked up and the owner reoriented the rear end yoke to be in line with the drive shaft to "make it better" only to wonder why they keep losing ujoints. But I wonder if a lot of us don't stop to realize that unless the implement, whether it's a hammer mill, honey wagon, etc will vibrate if the pto is engaged and the tractor pto and the implement input shafts are not in alignment. Am I mistaken?
