Since Friday, 2 bus drivers have been arrested for DUI. One about an hour after finishing her morning route. The other, after he ran his bus, with kids on it, into a ditch. According to the news, it is unknown whether or not they're still employed . Can't figure out how to link the story on my phone but pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Yup. After she finished her route. I'm assuming she was on the way home. Probably between 830 and 9 I guess

DUI while driving a school bus should be grounds for immediate suspension and termination if found guilty. GSP should have cuffed and stuffed the driver regardless of what the school system wanted. The problem is that most of the school systems around are having trouble finding bus drivers so they are taking what they can get and getting them a quick CDL. The threat of lawsuits against the drivers and the school system not backing the drivers when they are not in the wrong cause a lot of good drivers to quit. The good parents are suffering from the actions of the irresponsible parent(s) who think their little Johnny can do no wrong and want to sue anybody they can.

Sadly this is and will continue to occur at a expanding rate, the bus services, even trucking firms are dealing with this as Driver Shortages are crippling BOTH.  Several have waived Drug Screens until new hires can be allowed to 'Detox' enough they could MAYBE Pass a DOT test, and again sadly, most do NOT. Medical Mary Jane is fast becoming a concern where is LEGAL to buy and use but the idiots consider it so much a necessity they fail to understand CANNOT HAVE A CDL because they use.  Then are some just "Have a Drink or Two" using "Occasionally" as wording to mask Daily and from morning to evening not realizing they will be caught at some point.  Of seven New Potential Drivers at a close by trucking company ONE passed a Screening, of sixteen applicant bus drivers near here only TWO passed, a few for MJ and others with BAC issues.   | ||

When I was driving it seems several cars setting in the employee parking lot had MN WISHEY plates issued to drivers with DUI arrests .  Now with the Medical and Recreational Marjauana legal and gummies containing THC evidently a CDL is something that will soon be a thing of the past as liberal ideas take over of what is allowed . The .04 and your busted with a CDL and can have your licensed pulled has been around for a while .

This is the problem.  The economy is at full employment (3.5% unemployment) so good drivers  don't have to take bus driving jobs when they can find better paying jobs elsewhere.  Schools end up with the dregs. Edited by dee_veloper - 26 Aug 2022 at 11:05pm

It's full employment, but regardless there's no difference to the employers trying to hire people...no applicants or lack or qualified applicants.

I'd think the parents of kids would be raising hell with the school superintendent and school board over these 2 drivers.   Most state governments track and some investigate accidents of school buses.   The Federal CDL w/ Passenger endorsement to drive a school bus should mandate an investigation on the accident and should place driver out of service & send driver for an immediate drug & alcohol test. That is unless the Feds have relaxed the rules for CDL in last few years.  | ||

The REAL problem, is there's a lack of drivers, because the resultant compensation offered is significantly lower than what a sensible individual would be able to survive amidst. In my locality, the bus-driver shortage is not the 'school system's problem', because, rather than being school-system employees, they're all hired by a company two whom the school system has awarded an outsourcing contract.  This outsourced company offers no significant benefits, no health insurance, no savings plan, and drivers are paid by the hour, for the 1.5hr morning and 1.5hr afternoon run, 5 days a week. It is for these reasons, and fleet management, maintenance, and storage, that the 'bottom line' of outsourcing is so appealing to school districts... and the minimal hours and no benefits makes the contract so profitable to the contracted company. There's lots of people who vacated the employed sector, and they all had their reasons... if there wasn't an outpouring of fiscal support for those who 'choose' not to work, they'd clearly develop a different disposition, but the concept of outsourcing our kids' transportation to school means that we'll get whatever level of service, security, and safety that outsourcing will yield.  Bein's that it's in a profit-driven environment, one can expect that Service, Security, and Safety will all be kept to the absolute minimum, to assure the highest profit for the contractor.

Not at full employment, just a great deal came off UI Roles so NO Longer Counted, are several Thousand estimated(Local Newspaper Reporter) in a few surrounding towns that are NOT on UI and cannot get it so do NOT count, they are those that joined the Great Resignation and are regretting that.  Best any one with reasonable aptitude can tell, the Unemployment value is off by a FACTOR of minimum 2 and possibly of 5.

The labor force participation rate is the percentage of the civilian noninstitutional population 16 years and older that is working or actively looking for work. It is an important labor market measure because it represents the relative amount of labor resources available for the production of goods and services. Pretty SAD that less than 65% of the BODIES able to work are actually working..

The driver that wrecked the bus has been fired and charged. The driver that got a DUI after her route has been suspended until those charges are resolved. Her DUI came about an hour after her route so it is possible she didn't take her medication until after she finished. The driver that ran off in the ditch has been charged with DUI, failure to maintain lane, hit and run, 40 counts of child endangerment, 40 counts of reckless conduct, and cruelty in the 2nd degree. . I'd say they're throwing the book at him and it is justly deserved.

Several surrounding municipalities have unsuccessfully sought Bus, Trash, Street Department "Workers", do get ne'er-do-wells that cannot put their phones down, cannot stop sucking on designer Soda or Coffee products long enough to earn a CDL or to actually lean upon a shovel and trash, well that is just not their worth and ALL the above at wages I would have taken IN A HEARTBEAT as a Lad.  Can hardly wait for the whining when all the services these morons require shut off.   Those that DO at least show up do so for a Minimal amount of payroll time to turn around and seek out UI finding they do NOT qualify or the employing agency signs off a Decline Order.
