Hit at it under the air compressor post as to old still in use engines. Trade schools instruction seems to have gone to the Dark Side pushing technology that does not always exist in real time employ.

Currently have a part time job running a dump truck, searching new hires have been arriving to apply yet as to training from a school only see newer electronic wizardry equipment. Auto or semi auto transmissions, self limiting electronic functions on heavy equipment, no clutch pedal, expect all the new wonders no matter the employer and unable to manage when confronted with Old Style machines.

Had the misfortune to have a kid suspected as ‘On the Spectrum’ to be allowed to drive the machines I use. Abusive, absolutely no finesse, attempts to explain a few finer /easier to replicate functions as NOT stab at the throttle, NOT spin tires or tracks endlessly/needlessly fell to deaf ears. My suggestion of a yard stick or old fiberglass antenna to gain attention when do something wrong was met with great anguish as to NOT do so. Kid is rough on machines, not seeing any better from other recent tentative hires, several walked in days, a few others relegated to drudgery duty cleaning up areas and assisting other work.

Here in Ontario, NO education is needed to drive a dump truck...
last week, one guy  took out a pedestrian bridge across the QEW in Toronto, shut down highway ,both directions...
same day THREE dumpers collided......
few years back, Burlington Skyway Bridges was shut down as guy had the dump UP, hit the bridge.

Dumpers coming out of the local quarry don't know that the red octagon means..

Dumpers coming to the local stoplight don't understand what their RED light means...
I've also noticed that very,very few 'thank you' flash their lights  when you flash 'clear to come on over' when they want your lane.

Ya, -- I quit driving semis the day they traded my 94  W-900 -- 10 speed for a STUPID AUTOMATIC truck and expected me to drive it! NOT ON MY WATCH, --- AINT GONNA HAPPEN!!!!!!!! I gave up my cdl because of that!

automatic
standard

if you can drive standards you're allowed to drive automatics...

Ya, ALLOWED to but WHO wants to drive a semi with an automatic trans??? Buddy of mine got killed going down a mountain in one of them when the trans went out and brakes burned up and he went over the edge! Never did find all of him!

The military was going to all automatics before I retired because the new recruits could not drive a manual transmission. It's the progressive dumbing down of our population. Both my daughter and my granddaughter can drive a manual, my daughter prefers it to an automatic.

What was really sad of that is the manuals the US Mil had were FULLY SYNCHRONIZED.  Shifted like a big pickup truck, and the newbies could not handle.

SAD world we live in today! Lazy people growing up. Manual gets 3 times the mpg than automatics too. I proved that in my 96 f-150!
5-speed od and your off to the races! I am stuck with automatics in 2 of my f-350's and the 90 is a 5 speed od 4x4 dual wheel jobber with a 460 in it! Havent gotten him runnin yet! LOL! Scared to I guess! LOL!
