I have a D-17 Series III that has 18.4 x 28 tires on it. I need to buy and new set of tires and the book calls for 16.9 x 28 for it. I was wondering if some of the D-17 came with 18.4 x 28? Does that big of a tire take away from the horse power? Or hurt anything else?

The D-17 series III sales literature lists 14.9 x 28 as the standard rear tire. It doesn't list an option but my bet is the 16.9 x 28 was an option. The series IV had 16.9 as standard and 18.4 as the option. If you are going the use 18.4's be sure that your rims are wide enough with is likely 15".

The wider the tire the more horsepower to the ground in most cases.

The 16.9 x 28 must have been an option then because in the Operator's Manual that I have for the D17 Series III lists both the 14.9 x 28 and the 16.9 x 28 as rear tire size under general specifications.

A question for the AC Guru's...is there any engine (gas), weight or gear differences between the D17 Series III and IV?

If there should be no problem replacing the 18.4 x 28's that are currently my D17 Series III with the same size tire. Correct?

Me D17 Series III currently has 18.4 x 28 tires that are loaded and the optional sectional weights on the rear wheels for and added 300 lbs. Ive read various articles over the years that talk about having to much weight and too big of tires and causing the tractor to lose power. The current set up seems to work fairly well but I was wondering if I have to much weight or the tire size is too big. For some add info I live in WV and I farm level and hilly ground...if that matters at all.

Randy...I know you said in most cases the wider the tire the more horsepower to the ground. When is this not true?

Im trying to figure out what to do because I need to get some new tires for my D17 ASAP and want to get the best setup for my tractor.

rims & tires off of a white 5542 or 542 combine bolt right on. I needed a set of tires fast as i had a trailer load of hay to unload . Measured them up & they bolted right on.

No differences on the engines or trans between series III and series IV D17s, the big differenece is the independent low pressure hydralic pump on the series IV, verses the high pressure low volume pump on the series III and the rear end housing and hitch are different on the series IV-its set up to for the factory three point hitch option. HTH

I think there is a final drive gear ratio difference between gas and diesel.

Our series IV had 18.4s on it from factory, would have been a dealer option. We used it for our primary tractor till we added a 185. It always had good traction and was weighted down front and rear. We had rolling heavy soil and pulled a 3/14 plow, 13' disk and 10' digger. I would think for 18.4s it should have 16" rims but I could be wrong.

Final drive ratio is the same between gas and diesels.

Looked at a set of tires this week. The imprint on sidewall said 16.9 on 15 inch rim and the 18.4 tire said on 16 inch rim.

Would an inch really make a difference? How do you measure the width of your rims? From what to what?

Seems I recall seeing somewhere that the 16.9-28's were standard on the gas and 14's were standard on the diesel"s. Since I don't remember where I saw this then I don't have anything to back it up, but, I do know there were several options. Just because it was a diesel didn't mean you couldn't get 16's on your tractor.

I do like the looks of the 18's on a 17. That and wide front tires look real good.

my 63 has 16.9-28 its an industrial d17 and had the option for 14.9-28 it all depends on what you use it for . The narrower the cheeper but wide tires have better floatation.

15'' rims work ok on 18.4 but the wider 16'' is better and what the tires call for. On 185s the early years their 30'' tires all came with 15'' rims until the rim co. started making 16''.In most cases your tractor is only as good in the field as your tires are. 18.4 are great for D-17s. I would never us those little toy tires like 13.6s on 45s or 14.9s on D-17s.

I had just purchased a excellent pair of 28" PS rims and thought they were 15" for 18.4 tires. I just measured them and they are 16". You guys are right on rim width. I just split and added 5" to a pair of factory dual rims for my D-21. It is now going to have 23.1 x 34" duals. I did the same on the main rims when I got rid of the originial 18.4's that were on the 21. Correct rim width is very important.

I will when everything is mounted. I have to pickup the tires at Sandylake in a few weeks.

Someone has posted some old Farm Progress Show pictures. My dual hardware is the same as the D-21 on those pictures.

I'm sure that 18.4's will be fine on 15" rims but better on 16" rims
