Hello
New to the forum and orange family.
I have a wd and a wd45. just recently purchased the 45 and have had the wd for most of summer. I also have jensales operators and service manual.
Now the question. My wd idles fine, and as I move the throttle RPMs gradually pick up until reaching full throttle or if set for half throttle, that is half way on quadrant etc.   On my 45 starts and idles fine, but by an eighth to quarter throttle I am at wide open throttle.
any thoughts would be much appreciated?

Welcome to the Allis forum! Nice tractors! Some pictures?
Couple things come to mind that I found on the first WD we got.
It would start and then the throttle lever would work downward and the engine would start to increase RPM on its own.
the issues were:
1. The compression spring under the quadrant was worn out and soft.
2. Each joint in the throttle rod control system was worn about 1/8 inch. I think there are 3 locations.
3. The optional spring on the carb rod was no where to be found. This goes down and hooks on the drain for the block. Helps control idle on early WD's.
4. The big spring under the tank was not the right one, and was not helping return or hold idle.

After going through these RPM linkage items and fixing them, the tractor preformed about like a new one. I was worried that the governor was bad. Since then, this is one of the first repairs I look to make.

Thank you. the wd45 would not have the spring to block then? Correct? that appears to be the only spring missing. also obvious i think? the carb on this on is a marvel vs zenith. did read a post on this site after trying a search other owner found fork on governor worn. still will check linkage wear? just seems like carb opens way to early and easy.

All those joints and the govenor are designed to keep that carb steady and not acting weird. That doesn't mean something could not be wrong this the carb. Have you tried holding the rod to the carb and moving it slowly to see what happens?
And yes the spring was eliminated on the WD45.

Start with the basic adjustments. Engine off. Throttle wide open. Disconnect the governor link rod behind the generator. Now check the length of the link rod. It should slide back into the vertical governor arm hole without moving the vertical arm while pushing the link rod rearward.. Bend the link rod in the middle to shorten it to correct length. Start engine and try it out.

Great to have experts on this site. Maybe this is why the Allis I am working on had a bent rod behind the generator? Sorry if I question everything, but is the bending of this rod in the Allis manuals somewhere? Sorry I don't have a repair manual yet. But it is on the list.

A-C had a tool to bend/adjust the vertical governor arm. It is very rare to ever have to make the linkage longer.....always shorter. Much easier to pull downward on the link rod to shorten it, unless you have the official governor arm bending tool. And I prefer to make the rod 1/16" to 1/8" shorter than full open, but that's just me.

will give it a try. the link rod is from cross shaft to carb, correct?  also prior to doing so I Know i have read somewhere (oper. or service manual) that the rod from the bell crank to control shaft adjusted by wide open and then pushing rod shaft all the way in and tighten set screw? at bell crank? do first? fI would guess. may be way off  base

By7 the way, wd at farm, and 45 in garage, very cold in WI right now, will try to get pics up soon. Is there a welcome area in the forum, if not Might I suggest incorporating one?
no offense, just have case garden tractors (Orange as well) and has similar topic in forum, great place for newbees.  also does any still follow storage procedure in maunual. obviously battery and fuel are a concern. usually change oil prior to winter, combustion  particulates in oil from normal operation, vs fresh oil. nI just make sure freeze protect good on antifreeze. I guess only thing left, tires off ground? wd45 as liquid in them

Ok sugermaker, see what I can do. let me tell you about the Saturday I had from allis standpoint, checked out an ad that said farm stuff earlier in week and guy set up appt for yesterday. said he had a cultivator off an AC.  when i bought the wd in june, prior to the wd45, the guy gave me a (tool bar) said you mount cultivators to it.  So I show up to see this cultivator yesterday, he didnt have any idea how it went on, nor do I.  I will get some pics of everything and post under new thread as the subject should be cultivator assembly help i would guess LOL  Confused

 Sounds like you came home with more equipment. Congratulations! I may not be of much help on the cultivators. Dad had cultivators for the WD but I never seen them on the tractor. He let them set out behind the barn and they were not in good shape when the farm was sold.

I am having problems with my governor as well. i have an early wd and it doesn't have a spring on the throttle but i think it did as i found part of a spring that looked like it might have gone there. the wd doesn't like to start very easy i have to put my hand over the carb for the air intake and pull the tarter for it to start. Can anyone tell me whats wrong with it? also what does the tool look like for the bending the governor rod as i have found some wierd tools in the tool box when i got it.

Welcome Hopper!! As far as the hard starting goes I would make sure the choke lever is fully closing the choke when you pull it. I believe there is an adjustment for this at the carb so that it will function just the same as you putting your hand over the air inlet.

Hopper on the M-A carb choke butterfly there is usually a small spring loaded butterfly with a spring to let air in once it starts and probably spring or even small baffle are missing. Leon

 Welcome!
You might want to start a new thread on your tractor issues. Lots of things to check before you start bending things. Also carb type and some pictures may help too.
The first WD I brought home had engine revving issues till I went thru and brought all the mechanisms back to spec. Like springs and worn joints and adjustments.

I use two box end wrenches. One to support the rod and the other to bend it. Not the best tool but if you are careful it works. If the weights are loose this will also cause poor governor response. Not a bad idea to check the weights. It's not common, but I have seen a few weights wear out and fall into the timing gears.
