I have an 8070 FWA with an oil leak between the engine block and the rear of the timing case. I have found that a couple of the bolts around the water pump have snapped off and fallen out. The gasket between the block and rear timing case cover is working its way out. I have been through the workshop manual and it looks like I can get the rear timing cover off without pulling the camshaft. All I have to do is remove the cam gear.

Is this possible ?  Is there anything to watch out for ? Can the gear be refitted to the camshaft easy enough ?

You have it right. The cam gear has a bolt holding it on with 1/2 of a 1/2 moon key.May not even need a puller to remove gear(can't remember) but it doesn't come off hard.Shouldn't be hard to reinstall. (Mines still apart)
