looking a little at a IH tractor at a upcoming consignment sale, how do you tell if the ta is good, or do you find out its out at home when you put it under a load. maybe work both sides of the ta with the brakes pushed down to see if it will slip?

What model IH?  Some had mechanical TA with ramps and rollers. These were a pulling TA only. Meaning NO Hold Back in low side (free wheel down hill with disastrous catastophic failure if it over sped too much). One check is to put TA in low side ,trans in upper gears and stand on brakes to see if it slips. Ultimate  test is with a plow or disk and see if it slips in low side.HTH  Tim
