Just put new resistor on to step down the voltage to 6 volts. I am still getting 12 volts to my coil. Not sure what could be the problem

Remove the coil and resister and buy a 3 ohm coil. Made to run 12 volts.

You apparently have a 12 volt battery and an old 6 volt coil. Just buy a new coil made for 12 volt system and you will be fine. The distributor and point don't know the difference. Old coil and resistor is a patch job, will cause you problems over time... just get rid of it now.

make sure the new coil says "12 volt with no external resistor ".

Your system now looks something like this ?  Change the coil and resistor to one unit new coil.

Before I put the resistor on I had a ballast resistor and a 12 volt coil. The coil on there is probably 15+ years old

some coils say "needs external resistor" and some say "no external resistor needed..... for 12 volt systems.
