Dave, I got one about 2 years ago to work on, wouldn't go.up hills at all, they said they put a new drive belt on, but put it on wrong, didnt have enough tension on the belt, my grandfather had one also, if you"loose reverse " the belt needs changed also, I would look at the belt before doing anything and it is kind of a pain to change also just to let you know

There are 3 ways to do job GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. YOU MAY CHOOSE 2. If its FAST & CHEAP it won't be GOOD, if it's GOOD & CHEAP it won't be FAST, and if its GOOD & FAST it won't be CHEAP!!!!

Dave, does it have a 'Tufftorque' Hydro unit in it ??
If so it CAN be fixed IF it still kinda goes forward and backwards.
Cost is $25 plus 2 cans of SYNTHETIC oil.
Labour is 'free'.
1) remove hydro from rider....
2) turn upsidedown to drain...for 2-3 days
3) order 'kit' from tufftorque..oops should have been #1.
4) CAREFULLY remove steel bolts from aluminum housing, I did say CAREFLLY( yeah, I broke 2 bolts off....)
5) cleanout any crud, wipe shavings off magnets, etc.
6) install the 'kit' ( metal holder and 2-3 magnets)
7) gasket seal the housing and button up
8) on bench fill with SYNTHETIC oil
9) Purge hydro FOLLOWING tufftorque's paper
10) reinstall into rider
11) Purge hydro FOLLOWING tufftorque's paper again
12) drive it out of shop and have fun.
The JD hydro's are below Tufftorques specs.
NO drain plug
Uses 10W30 oil NOT synthetic
Fewer # of magnets,in wrong places too

hope this helps,PM if need more info.
