Thinking of building a smaller tractor to play with. Would like to pull in 4000 and 4500 classes. (Basically natpa division III.) 3.5 or 5 mph max speed limit pulls. Non cut tires. Is there any advantage to the d17 or should I just go with a wd45? Mainly just interested in the speed differences. Would the power director be of any advantage at these speeds? Thanks guys.

WD45 easier to balance and add weight brackets too

D17 does have gearing advantage.

I'm just thinking that wd would just have one useable gear. D17 might have two. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

(Rpm* tire diameter)/ (gear reduction*336)=mph. I don't know what natpa division 3 speed limit is, but figure out the rpm you will be running and your tires diameter to compare the different gearings. For example our wd45 has first gear reduction of 98.32. So at 1800rpms with our 15.5 38's it looks like this. (1800*60)/(98.32*336)=3.26mph, with no slippage of course. So figure out your engine rpm, and tires you want to run and pick the tractor by gearing. I have all the reduction numbers if u wamt them courtesy of the Antique Tractor Pull Guide. Wd would be easier to balance though.

A 17 would have no weight on it in 4000 and 100lb on front in 4500 I think it's 3.5 mph and aloud cuts in div. 3. 17 can run more rpms. But natpa won't allow a 17 below 4500lb class. Just my 2 cents.   Shawn.

I have a WD with WD45 crank in it that I pull 3,500-4,500 and a D17that I have down to 3,800lbs.WD will outpull D17 all day long just cuz it balances so much better. Only advantage to D17 is if you go heavy weight classes since it has all gears to choose from. I run 13.6-38" tires on both. Low 3rd on D17 is about same as 1st on WD.

I came home with a narrow front wd45 last weekend. I'll probably have many upcoming forum questions. Thanks guys.
