I am fixing the oil leaks in the power steering on my D19 Diesel. So far all i should need is new gaskets and orings as everything else looks good inside. One problem that it had is it would get hard to steer. It would steer nice and easy then get hard then loosen up again. It is as if something was binding. I mainly noticed it when you turned to the left. What would cause this? Thanks Matt

Make sure the power steering belt is not slipping.

Some easy things to check are the belt as already mentioned. It has to be TIGHT, half tight oily belts dont cut it. Also the input shaft to the steering box/valve must be free to move in and out just a smidgen, that is what makes the valve direct flow. Next time it is steering hard the one direction pull back on the steering wheel, if your power sterring returns look at two things, the shaft coupling gets ful of dirt and rust and on our D-19 the upper steering shaft and bushing was so worn out that whe you leaned on the steering wheel it pushed on the valve, a washer and a little milling machine work fixed it. There is also a pin that shears in the steering rack that causes it to steer hard one direction but that would be all the time, not part time.
