i bought a 616 without a motor and before i put the bucks into buying one I was wondering if there is a way to bench test the hydro to verify function.  the thing had been parked for several decades but thankfully i only gave $70 for it.

Can't help ya on the Hydro, but a 616 for $70. bucks should be the deal of the year on this board! Basically, you bought a seat and a Tractor came with it. From what I understand, the Hydro's are pretty bulletproof. The Onan engines seem to be questionable to some though. I'm restoring a 620 at present that I purchased for $500 bucks which I thought was a deal with an engine that had a knock. That knock, to my surprise turned out to be a starter bracket bolt that backed out and interfered with the flywheel making the knocking noise. To say the least, I was greatly relieved, but unfortunately, I didn't know that till I pulled the engine and found the bolt hanging out, so I never did get the engine fired up to try the tranny out being the previous owner said the engine knocked. Didn't want to cause anymore damage to the engine if I could save it. I guess I'll find out once I get it back together whether the Hydro is gonna work. So far the oil in it is super clean along with the engine's oil being nice n' clean also. I guess its a chance you take. I'm keepin' ma' fingers n' toes crossed...

Dang, what a deal! As Steve said, Hydro units are pretty much trouble free.  You might be able to rig up another engine to turn pump to try. Large hydro repair shops could probally test it. But it would be  lot of work to remove unit and take to them. I would hook up an engine up to it and see what happens.
