I have an 1984 8010 that the tach reading seems to be off somewhat.  At idle (700 to 1000 rpm) it seems to be correct, but the more rpm that is added the more the tach seems to be off.  At 1700 rpm according to the tach the engine seems to be running about 2200 rpm (just from the sound of the engine).  Also at full throttle it will only achieve 1900 rpm.  Could this be a problem with the pick up sensor on the bell housing?   I read somewhere that the resistance at the senser should be between 100 and 500 ohms, but I have read post on here that it could be a problem with the altnernater.

Thanks

IF YOUR TACH IS SHOWING RPM AND ADDING HOURS THE TACH IS OK. PROBLEM IS PROBABLY DIRTY GROUNDS. NEIHOFF ALTS. WHEN THEY WEAR OUT CAN TAKE OUT THE TACH AND THE ALT. LITE IN THE LITE BAR ABOVE. CHECK THE CLEARANCE OF THE SENSOR. I THINK THEY ARE APPX. 10 THOUSANDS.
