My WD is a 51 and is noisey in the gears.  I think all of them with the straight cut gears are in my experience.

Have a 1950 wd and it's rear end is noisy. All of my 45s are quiet. Think it's pretty common

The noise is normal in those tractors. My 1950 WD did it from new.

Since I was a little kid and they weren't that old, they made noise and still do. I just drove my uncles for the first time the other day and that was the first thing i noticed. While driving check the fenders. These can vibrate and make the tranny noise even louder when they hum along.
Regards,
 Chris
