You better figure out where and what type/kind of "pulling" you are going to compete in. Sounds like another wannabe Puller who doesn't really have a plan.

Unless you have some pulling experience, walk before you run. Try pulling in some stock antique classes, until you get some ideas about weight transfer, balance and traction.

D-17's belong at 5,500 lbs and under to be competitive.

If it's a non turbo class a 301 gas engine would be a much smarter choice @ 7,000 lbs. Whether it's in a 180 or 190 doesn't really matter. The 180 would be a little lighter I suppose. A D 17 has no business in that class.

I certainly didn't mean to antagonize you. I was merely pointing out that you need experience before jumping in too far.
As the others said, a D-17 is just too small to be competitive in a 7000 lb. class. You will be competing against 560's, 88's, 4010's and a lot of other tractors that are a lot more cubic inches. It would be frustrating and, probably, down right embarrassing to be out classed so bad.
If you were building a tractor for a 4500 lb. class, a D-17 might be able to be competitive, but it is just too small for 7000 lbs.

YTmag.com is another forum. (Yesterday's tractors). They have a pretty good pulling section.

It helps when your opening statement is specific. It happens on this forum all the time with someone asking a very general question to a very specific situation. Your third post gave us a little something to work with. The first didn't.

So it's a diesel D17? I think you can tune it up a bit, but I don't think a non turbo 262 will get close to 100 hp. Those old design lanova cell engines just aren't very efficient. Maybe 80hp? I'm not saying it won't be fun, or competitive, but it most likely will not dominate. Remember, you don't have to have the most hp, but it does help lol!

Play with the injection pump timing and fuel setting all you want on a One-Eighty, and you won't see 100 HP without a turbo. Best guess would be about 85 HP and a lot of smoke.
