Depends on the turbo you are using and how much air you are flowing. If you are moving enough air 450 would be better, but you need the right combination.

If you are at 301 C.I. I would guess the clutch will still hold at 400 or so HP if the PD clutch was in good condition and the pressure was increased. A larger displacement engine will make more torque and it's really the ft. lbs. that will make it slip. By the way, if you are running open RPM I would remove it no matter what the HP level.

I am running a 301 and I don't have plans to go over 3500 rpm yet it runs high rpm now but I don't have a tack I am just looking to run road gear in 6000 pound class and not shift down

Some say the power director shouldn't spin over 3000 rpms

Look, boys. The Power Director clutch is in two pieces. Those two pieces are held together by six- 5/16" Gr 8 bolts and locknuts. As the hydraulic pressure is increased to be able to transmit the increased HP, those teeny-weeny bolts and the cast iron ears the bolts go thru can say ENOUGH !! and the whole thing can explode. Nothing to do with balance.....it's a structure thing and RPM's double what it was intended for makes it even worse.

If the PD clutch explodes you will not only injure yourself, but could very possibly injure others. It is made from cast iron pieces and spins at up to engine speed. Yes, you can probably get away with it for a while, but the cast will start to crack a little at a time until one day BOOM and you have a serious problem - like hamburger for legs. Be smart and take it out and install a PD delete coupler before someone gets hurt. If you plan to have enough horsepower to run direct drive you have far exceeded what the PD will handle anyway. Same goes for the stock foot clutch.
Now, as far as running road gear (and making a complete run - spinning it out with authority - no sneezing) with 18.4 X 38's (if that is the plan)you will need a well tuned .450 head and rotor and hope it's enough. You won't make enough power with anything smaller. Sorry, that's just how it is.
Talk to Injpumped Ed. He is very good with them. He can set you up with properly sized injectors too I'm sure.

A .390 will be good for small turbo, and less than road gear on a 301, but if road gear is what you desire, then a fully built .450 pump is what you'll need. There's a lot more to it than just sticking a .450 head in the stock pump. I only sell them in a pump job. They have been hard to get a hold of, and very expensive, so that is why I only do it that way. Also, bigger injector nozzles set properly, and larger lines are a must.

There is a huge difference between running 6th gear and running road gear in a 190. Whatever the number of horsepower and Ft lbs. it takes to run 6th gear has to more than double to run road gear. The road from where you are at now to direct drive includes but is not limited to a change in the fuel system, turbo, cylinder head, clutch, head gasket, connecting rods etc. just to name a few. It would take a damn good Roosa fueled stock cubed 301 engine to run road gear - even at 6,000 lbs. 7th gear is much easier.
If your current injection pump is not set to govern at a certain speed of 3,000 RPM or less, then I would consider it to be an open RPM tractor. Unless you limit it to 3,000 RPM or less I would remove the PD clutch.
Good luck.
