looking for ideas to install glow plug in intake to aid in starting? any ideas? rebuilt engine all in time runs great .starts very easy when warm . are all 262s hard starters when cold?

I would think it should already have a glow plug, the tractor application does. might need to verify its working or maby you should have your pump and injectors checked

I have an older one with the 262 (might be a 230, I can't recall). Had a ether can with me, needed to move it forward, in dec, 30 degree weather, knew the battery was down, ether can had about 1/2 shot of ether left in it, get the picture? Hit the starter lever, and by the time I had jiggled the can around to get it spraying, the ole booger had started!
I would say check injector timing first, then go from there. THe plug you are looking for is an air horn pre heater, goes in the intake manifold, heat it for a minute, then start. check with sandy lake equipment, they should know which part it is. NEVER use ether, with a pre-heater, or you will be picking up pieces of busted manifold up!

thanks for the name air horn preheater. I had inj. pump and injectors both rebuilt .checked pump timing many times it looks right. it does smoke a lot when its turning over to start but runs out fine. after first start it starts on 1/2 turn. just bump it and it starts. I was just thinking 262s are hard starters. Do you think I could put a hi torque starter to speed up starting? any help would be great. thanks.

The most bang for the buck, as far as the 262 diesel goes, that I have ever done, was installing a thermosiphon type coolant heater. it is around 1000 watt, you draw from the block drain, on the LS of the motor, and discharge into the thermostat bypass hose, on the top of the head. The heater really heats the whole block and head, and circulates the coolant, so it is heated evenly. Plug in for a half hour, and it'll start like a dream.

A 262 diesel is a precup or lanova style engine, and every engine that style is a hard cold start, its the nature of the beast, and makes no difference who built it. An example would be the 6.9-7.3 IDI engines in the older fords, no glow plugs equals no start. There should be a glow plug on your engine, and you either have a seperate switch for it, or you turn the ignition all the way over to start, if you have a push buton for starting, and you should hear a solinoid click, thats your glow plug/manifold heater. Give it a good 30 second count or more depending on the weather and she should start. Met a guy once that had a D-17 diesel and hated it becasue he wasnt aware of the heater, once I showed him how to start the tractor he was amazed how easy it lit up.

Also the cups that the injectors spray into will get plugged shut and make starting hard. they are on the other side of engine across from injector. might have to remove them and clean out.

My HD6 has those cups, I was wondering what they are for. Also on topic my DD 262 Is also hard to start, Only on first start up in cold weather
Always give her a shot of start fluid, Im just getting the Injector pump overhauled (Rooser Master) and Im told it will be easier to start
