I have a allisChalmers 7000 tractor. Occasionally, usually when I need it most, the hydraulics seem to quit. No up and down and no forward and back. I have tried many times to find and fix the problem but can never find anything. After an hour or a year the tractor just starts working again. Does anyone know what is going on? I want this fixed once and for all. Thanks for any input.

Suction line is losing prime would be my guess. This is usually caused by the hose that goes from the steel line to the pump along the left side frame rail. A pretty big PITA to get to and stay clean doing it, but other than being messy, it's a straight forward removal. You can try to loosen a pressure line slightly and see if that helps it prime, just be very careful of the fluid. There is also a doughnut type gasket and a cork gasket down on the sump pan under the tractor (directly under the cab) that could be leaking, but usually it's the hose that gets a small split that allows air in and the fluid to drain back down, and thus, causing the pump to lose its prime.

That hose was replaced during previous attemts to fix and the whole suction checked for leaks. I should have noted in my initial posting that when I have this problem the "trans press over 1800 rpm" idiot light comes on.

If it has more than 4000 hrs on it, I'd reseal the pump internally including the shaft seal on the input drive.
