this is probably a long shot but wondered if the sicklebar mower from my b 12 would work on my 710, i know it would bolt in place but since the pto set ups are some what diffrent i wondered if it work work that way. i only wanted to swap it since my 710 is a 6 speed and has more gearing options, slower, thanks bill ------------- 1950 wd wide front w loader 1940 b, 1939 m crawler |

No. The 710 will run the mower too fast and will tear it up in no time. The sickle mowers for the 700 series have a special planetary gear reduction setup to reduce the speed. ------------- 10 various B-series garden tractors, AC Homesteader8, 416 hydro,710 gt, 914, 916H, 917H, 920D, and many misc attachments |

I took the 6 1/2" pulley off the trans and installed a 9" one and a new belt. There is room to put a 10" one on if you like. It doesn't take long to switch back and forth between the stock pulley/belt and the bigger one. A bigger pulley slows down the tractor quite a bit and may be just what you need. Sure slowed down my B-10 for tilling.

Marv and Bill, its not the ground speed that is the problem. As Matt pointed out, it is the PTO speed. The cone clutch on your 700 series will drive the sickle bar mechanisms much faster than they were designed for. Sickle mowers are prone to damage when they are run in an overspeed condition. Chris, I under stood that from your first post, but the only reason I wanted to switch was because the 710 had a slower ground speed, and marvs idea with the drive pulley would slow it down ground speed wise so I wouldn't need to switch tractors ------------- 1950 wd wide front w loader 1940 b, 1939 m crawler |

I'm pretty sure he meant ground speed.
I slowed down my B-10 for tilling. This summer I got a sickle mower for the WD and that tractor has the same problem. If you get the revs up a little bit to get the sickle moving fast enough, even in first gear the tractor moves too fast, unless your in a perfectly manicured flat field.
Fixing that will be way more than swapping a pulley....
My old man told me Allis's have always been fast when it comes to ground speed. I guess it even applies to garden tractors.

With that big pulley on the trans upping the torque, and the tiller hanging off the back, you can't ease off the clutch enough to get rolling without the front end coming off the ground. Kind of funny to see.

I just bought a sickle mower for my 616. Came with the manual. I will be reading it soon and will post any do's and don'ts concerning proper operation. |

I'm sorry Marv, I overlooked the fact he still posessed the B-12. The low speed pulley looks like a good idea. I call that modification "poor mans Hi Low" because its a lot cheaper than coughing up $200 or more for a hi low for one of these.

There are Simplicity Mfr. numbers for the larger diameter pulley/belt combinations. The parts are in stock at your local TSC. You can also buy an arbor and separate pulley to sreate your own and weld the two pieces together. The larger pulleys help a great deal when running the tiller. There is a caution in the manual that says not to run the engine at more than half throttle when cutting with the sickle bar. A friend of mine ran his up just briefly to show us how much the thing shakes. ------------- When was the last time you thanked a veteran. |
