I have kinda been designated to organize a tractor and truck pull for the FFA. Being as I participate in the sport I took it on.

We have a local motorsports arena with a good track, sled, lights,PA system, track equipment, and restroom facilities, and insurance, that we were offered for a special price as a help to the FFA Chapter.

I have a pretty good idea how to do this but would appreciate any advice. The pulls at this place used to be huge, but there was only one rule.... PAY. Then the "drop pan" sled come into play. I will say this, the first of the three pulls there this past year there was 9 tractors in the 3500,4000, 13 in the 4500, the last pull.., I was the only one there for those classes.
Planning on a 50% payback for each class so we can add or make any class not listed.

I am looking to pull antique tractors from 3500-7500#. I have no way of enforcing speed limits, other than first gear only. I feel a good set of rules, that will be enforced, and everyone knowing there will NOT be a drop pan utilized will help draw a crowd to this pull. Rules can't be USATPA, NATPA for the simple reason of policing them. I and whomever I can get to help will be the only ones that know and understand them. As pullers we all know the rules, this shouldn't be hard. Classes will be color coded at sign up, rules posted in the same color, scale operator will have color coded rules to match your class, this should help with confusion.

This is what I am thinking....

Farmstock... Factory drawbar, pto intact, factory size tires. Weight brackets will be permited, no weight over 10' forward from rear axle. 100# tolorance on scales

Antique 1900-1959... 3500-5000# any tire design up to 16.9 in width, 5500-7500 up to 18.4 width. 1st gear only, factory engine block (cannot replace 4 cyl with 6 cyl), 20% over rpm, 20" hitch height max, no weights over 11" forward from center of axle, 100# tolorance on scales

Open... up to 18.4 tire of any design, any gear, must have a working kill switch, functional wheelie bars, 20" hitch height, tractors with T/A, Power Director, may shift ONE (1) time during the pull.

Jack Pot KOH Classes, 4250, and 6250.

No, what do you think? I am askin. The FFA chapter cant afford this pull to go bust. I want to be as fair as possible to everyone, but once rules are posted I will not negotiate them so please discuss anything now...
.
This pull will also have trucks, and hot farm tractors.
2WD, 4WD gas, 4WD diesel. Different catigories for each.

I'm thinking with first gear only you might not get the turn out you expect ? Just my 2 cents. I'd see if you can rent someone speed rador

You will have to watch the "factory engine block" part of your rules. D17 in a wc comes to mind. Easy to tell but you know how some are.

Teching is always tough. I am still learning about a lot of the tricks that some try.

Any way you can get/use a pace tractor? local dealers will loan a new tractor for advertising. use a rope/chain and a booie, something to drag. say about 30 feet. booie even with front of the pulling tractor. when the puller starts the pace tractor starts. If the puller gets past even with the pace tractor, eye to eye, there dqed for speed. If the puller gets behind the booie they must stay behind it. or there d'qed. this way will "limit" the sand baging some drivers will try to do.

We've pulled in some 1st gear only pulls before. You should be OK with that. You might think about a an 18 in. drawbar height (or less) on your farmstock class. That keeps the fronts down and makes it a little safer.
Keep repeating the fact that its an FFA FUNDRAISING pull. Most won't expect a 50% payback and might even donate their winnings back. Its worth a shot.....

You really need a speed limit & some way to measure it. Maybe a bicycle tire with speedometer attached to the sled? I don't think 1st gear will work very good. As an example I have a WC I pull in 2nd at 3mph-RC gears- another that will blow horn in 1st at 3.5-both with 15.5 tires.

That's what I was talking bout. My 17' I pull in 5000,5500 I pull in 2nd gear. If it was first only I wouldn't pull cause it just spins out way to soon.

Will you allow a %rpm over on the farm stock class?  Also can you hook as many times as you want or would there be a limit?  I wouldn't do a 50% pay back because it's a good pull for a good cause.  I don't know what you're thinking on hook fee but I think you would draw more tractors if you don't charge $20 a hook like everyone does up here.  Me personally, I would bring both of my tractors and pull each 3 times for $15 a hook rather than just bringing one and pulling it 3 times for $20 a hook.  Yes I would spend less money at $20 a hook but I wouldn't spend the $120 to bring both.  Just a thought...

We are running a PFSN, where the rpm limit is factory high idle, FSN where hanging weights are allowed i am pretty sure it's 20% over. UNLIMITED HOOKS, ONCE PER CLASS PER DRIVER. Hook fees will be $20, with a 50% payback. If someone wants to donate their winnings back it will be appreciated. I really wanted to pull a $10 hook and do a "braggin Rights" pull but "I" am not the only one on the commitie. Being this is our first pull and, money is tight, they are afraid of a loss or money, there for they doin like the motorsports arena does. We saw their books, there is some profit with only a few hooks as long as the trucks show. I am working on the class sheet, looks like 23 antique tractor classes, including 2 KOH.

I help with our FFA pull this yr will be our 18th pull. We sell ads for a program to cover cost of pull. Last yr little over $6000.00 in ad sales, gate & concessions were over $12,000 which was our profit. I call the program our Insurance for not losing money. When is your pull? Our pull in Shady Dale, Ga will be 3-29-14.

We used to sell ads for our local fire department. We did it as a supplement to our local newspaper. They quoted us a price, per page to print it. We had pictures of our members and activities (ours included fire apparatus and fire scenes, but you could do FFA activities and schedules of upcoming events).

We had ads from $150 for a full page to Business card size for $15, so we could include every business, regardless of their advertising budget. We had several individuals purchase ads as supporters or sponsors.

We assigned certain areas to certain members. It was easy to see who worked selling ads!

This is the final draft awaiting approval Thursday night. We are hopeing we have a good turn out. We have rules drafted also, we took the rules of several local origizations and composed them into ours, trying to please everyone. The rules are on several pages, I used large fronts to make them easy to see. If you are interested I can post your class, or better yet E mail the whole thing. If anyone wants a flyer and rules to post in their community let me know! and thanks in advance.
The speed limit isn't completly out of the question. We may have one by the pull date, if so... 4 mph Antique, and 8 mph Open, 3 mph FSN 8 mph FST. KOH will be 5 mph. Not promising anything, but there has been talk.... I dont know the people well so I cant distinguish B/S from posibilities. We will not have the best run pull around I feel sure but, it wont be because we didn't try! It's our first, and probably the most important one.  Come pull with us!
