if a 149" is 3.5bx3.875s and a 160" is 3.625x 3.875"can a 149" be bored out to make it a 160? what other difference is there if any? its the same compression being the two engines..

just wondering

I don't think it would be worth 11 cu. in., 160 engine kits are pricey and you would have a lot of machine shop time for little gain. If you want a 160, then look around, their out there. My 2 cents worth. Gary

techinal----- 149 engine o-rings are on sleeves 160 engines are in block

gary is wright about the 160 sleeves,You will have machine work to make them fit,And they do cost about 3 times the 149 kit. Plus the rods are not the same 149 rods have a smaller pin and are of the clamp type,160 rods are full float and bigger pins. If you are wanting to build a puller I have built 5 of this type of pulling engines and I can help you.Just send me a PM.

ok jamie but ill have to find a 160 first.. i was asking the question because we currently have a D14 sitting in the shed that we havent used in a few yrs. was thinking of dropping the 149 into a ca but a 160 would be better

I have both the 149,s and 160,s from complete stuck long blocks to parts engines.

Yes Bob, u are wright, Orings are in the block on 138 and 149.

Jamie do you by any chance know the compression height of the 149 piston and the rod length. I am looking real hard at some v6 pistons in a 149 block.

No I don,t wright off hand, But I Can get that info for you on the pistons. The rods and 6.5 c to c .

I think there used to be an overbore sleeve kit available that would give you 153 ci or so.

Don't remember who made it and don't know if it's still available. If you need new liners and pistons anyway and can find it that might be the way to go.

When I rebuilt my D14 I used the overbore kit from A&I and the way I figured it up it put me within a couple inches of being 160. You also need to change out the governor spring, that is what makes a lot of difference. I changed my spring many years ago and it does make a difference. The 160 was rated at a higher RPM than the 149. You can still get the D15 II spring from Agco for 15 or 20 dollars.JP

I have a WD45 with a D17 gov spring in it. It hasent given me any trouble since its been in there, other than getting disqualified from tractor pulls for running too many rpms.

Our 149 kits are overbore, and will bump you a bit of CU's.

I put my D15 spring on in 1981 and it has never caused any problems. It was recomended by the local AC dealer and I didn't rebuild the engine until 4 years ago and I replaced the spring then just in case it was getting weak.JP
