I noticed the fuel return line to the tank was cut off and that line was hooked to the line to the air manifold heater. What effect does it have on an engine when the return line can't return any fuel?  I thought it would cause the engine to shut down...but this one always ran good other than the excessive blowby.

Would that let the fuel directly into the manifold? Might be what causing some excessive blowby maybe?

If the manifold heater works the way I think it does it would have a valve to keep fuel from running in unless the key was held....and I would think the engine would run higher rpm if it was dumping fuel into the air intake....I guess I could reconnect the return line to the tank and see how it runs.  I'm pretty sure the blowby is from stuck or broken rings. This was the tractor that sat in an almond orchard for 18 years. It used to take a shot of ether in the morning to get it going, now it takes about 3 tries and 5 minutes to get it running on all 4 cylinders.

It would probably reek of unburned fuel also when starting till it was running good I would think.  I remember old truckers talk about pinching their fuel return to force more into the engine. Old detroits I think.
