Maybe some of you can give me some practical advice. Since spring will soon be upon us, I need to buy a new mower for my place and though I'd get started looking now. I have 3 acres, with lots of trees and landscaping to nagivate around. I borrowed a ZT once last summer and really liked it. I don't have money for a new one, but thought I'd inquire with some of you for any recommendations on a decent used make/model to purchase or ones to avoid. Thanks...

I used to run a mowing business and I ran a Hustler and an Exmark. I liked both machines. The exmark was my smaller ztr to get into back yards and tight spots, and the Hustler was the Super Z model with 27hp and 60 inch deck. I ran just about every brand out there on occasion, and I will say I preferred my Hustler to any brand out there when you get into the "big boys" (60" plus sizes) If you're looking in the 48-52 inch range, I would look at either Exmark, or Scag. Exmark is going to a little cheaper in price, but I dont feel like it gives up much, if any in quality.

I have a 24hp cub zero turn. I bought mine on craigeslist 2 years ago used. 40hrs. As long as you keep it greased it works great. It sucks on wet grass and NO hills it slides way to easy. But my 416 allis can out cut it just she beats me on the turn arounds. but it trims great.

I use a 60" Dixie Chopper. Kinda pricey but, no complaints. Good heavy duty machine. Was using a 38" Murray and a tractor with 5' bushog. Took all day. Dixie Chipper, mowing the same area, cut mowing time to 2 1/2 hrs. Wife usually got it done during the week, so I didn't have to do it on the weekend. Sure is nice.

I used to mow a 30 acre cemetery, before I retired. We had two Hustlers, 72" cut, loved them. One was a Super Z, the other was a front mounted deck. The Super Z will mow any bank once you get used to it.

I know Exmark's are built like tanks. I have a Country Clipper with a 27hp Kohler, and a 52" deck. Mine has a joystick control. Makes it real easy to mow around stuff. One hand is free to lift branches, etc. As far as I know, C.C. is the only one to offer a joystick control. I don't like the the Kohler Courage engine. It's noisy. If you buy a Kohler powered machine, make sure it is a Command engine. The Command has hydraulic lifters where the Courage does not.
