I use my 7040 alot in the cold and it was cooooooold here last nite I plugged her in and after a few hours 4 or so she spins over really well and she tried to start one little burp of the ether and off she goes but Ive got a queston I understand the block heater and easing the turn over but why didnt AC use glow plugs etc to heat either the combustion chamber a bit more or the intake air... Seems ether was the easy way out but it worries me to use it even though it was less that 1/2 second burst etc and I was crankin and didnt hit the ether ti lI had nice smoke....  Just wonderin maybe nothin to worry bout but I like to worry....

Arch, I hate to say it, but it sounds like its a little hooked on the ether.  Your compression isn't the greatest in the cylinder for some reason, rings or valves and it isn't firing right off.  Use of the ether usually breaks the piston rings (the second ring, not the top as I'm told) and you lose compression.  Orrr... sometimes the fuel system needs to be looked at.  I bought a 7030 with a murphy switch installed.  It wouldn't start right off..cranked good, but needed ether to get it goin.  I took off the murphy switch (that had a valve in the fuel line just before the pump) and hooked the fuel line to the pump from the filter (like it came from the factory) and wah-lah! it starts much better now!  make sure you're not losing prime somewhere in the system.    Just some stuff to think  er... worry about!  lol    -Wes

I meant to say that it was always shut off by the murphy switch controls.  The shutoff cable was missing.  They could have shut off the engine by hand at the pump (and now that I think about it, I could have done the same thing) and it would have solved the problem of starving the pump of fuel every time it was shut down, then having to pump itself back up when started.    -Wes

Allis did have manifold heaters in the "hundred" series there not much help and take alot of battery juice to work (i have one on the 200). I have a 7040 with 9300hrs on it the engine has never been touched it will start down to 40 degrees with no problem, any colder without being plugged in and she gets a snort of ether, but fires right up. It did get running rough and hard starting (it got to where it wouldnt start)about two years ago, it took two people to start it (one to crank it and one to shoot ether in it)  it would start but wouldnt idle if you kept the rpms up it ran fine. It happend at harvest so i parked it for a while come to find out it had a pin hole in a fuel line and was sucking air, the hole was so small that it didnt leak any fuel at all. I replaced the line and itl start at 30 now. I still dont like to start a cold motor so i always plug it in if i can. If i have to i will use a snort of ether because its eaiser on the starter. I have a 7060 that will start at 0 without being plugged in or using ether within 3cranks. I would check the fuel lines by the injection pump thats where my "leak" was. If you want any more info on it e-mail me and il see what i can do for you.

I have an A-C diesel forklift that likes sniffs of ether as well.Has an intake heater that needs it's own battery! Otherwise it'll drain the main and starter won't spin. Yes, the fuel system needs some work but the old girl always starts with ether. After she's warmed up,she doesn't need the 'help'. A $5 can of ether gets me through 3/4 year of starts so is a lot less coins that I do not have compared to fuel injector rebuilds, rings, or whatever is really needed. My 2 C worth(Hay, whatever happened to the cents key anyway???)

Dans 7080 - What is the process to check, detect, & find pin-hole air leaks in injector fuel lines?  Do you have to remove each line and pressure check them?  My 7060 seems very cold blooded and requires about 50 degree air to start without ether & plug-in warmer.  Below 50 degrees, it cranks fast enough, produces a white smoke, & will hit on a few cyl but I have to constantly lean on the starter before it takes off on it's own.  Through your comments and others on this site, I am beginning to appreciate that the complete diesel fuel system is just as important as the engine itself.  Please keep enlighting me - Thanks.

Jaybmiller - I have a 706D with a replacement 433I engine from an F2.  I agree with all of your comments.  My fuel pump leaks on the top by the electric shutoff.  Does Agco make a repair kit for this?  Once started, it runs fine, but will continue to drip all the time unless I shutoff fuel back at the filter pepcock valve.

I like the AC in an IH! where in il are you, Eric? We are a Stanadyne authorized fuel injection shop in east peoria. you can call us at 309-427-0050.  the fuel leak could be fixed on the tractor, but we've found all the orings are shrinking and drying out due to bio-diesel, as well as ultra-low sulfer fuels. We may be able to help you, Ed.

mine fires right up down to say 40 but past that she is a cold blooded SOB now If I plug her in and leave her in the barn I can crank her over and after I get white smoke a few cranks shell go but I got the bright idea to leave her next to the hoese as my barn has no electricity ran to it I run the generator and thought hey Ill just plug it into the house and come out to plow well that little temp diff and the wind was it for me!!!!!!  I didnt see any leaks up front but did give the lines an extra 1/4 turn  Ive been told the ROOSA pumps especially if turned up a bit were aa bit cold blooded

one thing dad always does now is to use a can and give a squirt directly into the intake on the hood. the last time he used the button in the cab the engine in the 7060 blew the head gasket. now all the tractors have the wire disconected from the button. it could have just been a once in a hundred event. but better to be safe than sorry.

Try WD40, easier on the engine and works. Tracy Martin

I blew my 7040 head gasket with the same deal ether injection.  Hey so hows that wd40 thing work just a couple squirts into the intake????

On a cold day I unscrew the brass fitting on the intake manifold for the ether line and spray ether in there. If its below 40 degrees outside it will crank till the batterys are flat before it starts hitting. My 7060 likes either and my 7050 is straight addicted to it.  There usually never around electricity though so I cant plug them in. On my 7050 the primer pump orings are bad and if it sets for too long it looses prime.

InjpumpEd, "I like the AC in an IH! where in il are you, Eric?"
My 706D is an Allis Chalmers industrial rough terrain forklift, not an IH 706 diesel tractor.  Im from the Taylorville area.  I will try to call you on Monday about the fuel pump.  Thanks for the info.
